So your sitting at a red light

  1. Get out the way and worry about the consequences later. As said above it if was your house burning down / your relative had a heart attack etc. what would you expect of others? The blue lights aren't on for fun (apart from when plod is late for a tea break, obviously), so do the right thing.

The law exists to protect the citizens.
No judge in their right mind would convict if you move safely out of the way.

  9. You see it a lot on the continent, drivers just sitting there ignoring them completely.

Personally I move, there's normally some room to move into without blocking oncoming traffic.

  10. If its an ambulance or a fire engine I'm pull forward & to the side, if its the police I'll stay where I am. The police don't care about real crime, they are either late for dinner or off to book someone for doing 51 in a 50. I got no time for the police.

  12. In the car I pull out through the red light if it's clear and safe over to the other side and pull over with an indicator on showing I'm parked. Same on the motorbike. It requires no thought. The reason they've got flashing lights is to let you know they need to get through. If they can on the other side of the road fine, but you have to look yourself and decide if they can. I've been given the thumbs up by the rozzers a few times for getting out of the way and making sure they know I know they're there.

Mind you, on the bike it can be tempting to follow them as they clear a path through the cars. One time I was about 10 meters back, and the cop in the passenger seat just put his hand up, and then did the "index finger wave of saying no", just so I could see it through the back window. I stopped and let them carry on for about 200 yards.

  13. Happened to me the other day.
I was the only car in the right hand lane, big line of cars over on the left, rozzers with lights & sirens behind, I signalled right & shuffled forwards a bit, crept up the pavement onto the slabs for the blind, crossed the line but only a little bitsy bit.

  15. Wow... good thread,

Different scenario, your on a single carriageway in the dead of night and come across some temporary road works with traffic lights....you wait...and wait......pick your nose...tap a little...hum....wait...still red, could they possibly not be working flashes through your mind...fiddle with the radio....still red, just you and a red light in the middle of the countryside, the twinkling lights of distant villages can be seen, as well as the moon full and glowey...

I mean are you gonna sit there all night or turn round and go the other way hoping the satnav can correct your route ? after all it's a red light.

Personally after riding bikes and teaching people to ride, I take any safe oppotunity I can to legitimately jump a red, it's a middle finger to the man...a small but feelgood victory....and you never know you may save a life.

2 years ago a biker thought he was taking a "safe opportunity" to jump a red light. Unfortunately for him my old man was stopped to turn right and the biker ended up wrapped around a lamp post in bits.
Sort of mistake you'll only make once.
