So what's the ugliest car you had the pleasure of.

My mum bought a brown one. I begged her not to buy it but it was on a mechanic friends advice that she bought it.
Got to admit it never let her down, was 1.5 so quick for the time and drove like a dream.
There secret out proper good car :burp:

  2. I guess it wasn't really ugly - it just kept breaking down

  3. Brilliant motor. Had one in silver, ex mechanics motor. Complete shed whose seats smelt of oil.

  4. My dad had a 1750cc Sport saloon which was truly awful. It had a fair bit of poke in a straight line but that was it's only redeeming feature. Like the 1.5, the engine and gearbox were lifted straight from the Maxi complete with it's notorious cable operated gear shift linkage. Anyone who thinks their bus has a sloppy and vague gear change should try one of these beauties. At least on a bus the lever and transmission are about 8 feet apart, the bigger engined Allegros had no such excuse. It also smoked like a James Bond car as it burnt gallons of oil and had incredibly heavy steering. I'd only been driving a short time and even I knew how rubbish it was!

  5. 1989?
    I was seven.

  6. It was only the very early Maxi 1, produced May 69 - October 70 that had the cable shift, after that date and into the Allegro the shift was via rods. Not brilliant I concede, but like a bay, the rods could be adjusted to produce a relatively slick shift.

  7. Austin Ambassador. We had one when I was a kid. Replaced an Austin Maxi and preceded a Triumph Dolomite, then a Montego. My dad had a thing for hideous cars.

One of British Leylands finest creations, the Leyland P76. The sales high point was you could fit a 44 gallon drum in the boot.
4.4 litre V8 and released just in time for the oil crisis in 1977.
This one belongs to a mate in the local historic vehicle club.

I've never owned one but I have driven this one.

  9. This post is why I wanted to be American when I was young! Maybe swap the Yugo for a charger on second thoughts;)
I spent my youth driving round the Sussex countryside in a load of crappy British Leyland cars, you got to go clubbing in Brooklyn.
Not so sure about being American now though;)
