So out of all the engines that Volkswagen made and why?

  1. If you buy it and don't like it you can always rip the heart out of it.

  2. As VW stole the original engine designs from Tatra, the title's not strictly accurate ;)...

    All the VW engines??

VR6? W12? Twin Turbo out of the Golf R?

I've only had experience of the 2 litre type 4 and they’re good!

No disrespect to you nipper .. I better shut up before the honey monster turns up :D

  5. Type 4. Logically you’d say 2 litre but I went from 1700 to 2 litre and it wasn’t as nice to drive. 17 just seemed a bit more perky to me. I’ve driven a couple so it’s not just that one engine. So I’m going type 4 1700! (For standard motor) 2 litre with the dells on has a similar feel to it.

  6. Btw, 1700 is nothing like a 1600 which I’m sorry to say I have absolutely no time for and if I had one it would get replaced or upgraded.

  7. I'm happy enough with my 1700 with 1800 B&P, fast enough in a Bus.

After putting new rings in it, my type 4 1700, was a great motor! 90mph to and from Run to the Sun, was easy! I wouldn’t mind another one, in my van, but like any old motor, the 1600 twin port, is fine. They ain’t built for speed, just to get there and back. Friend of mine, Neil, who used to work for VW Evolution, bought a Type 5, and had it ‘remapped’.
He said it’s great for better fuel economy and extra power.
I told him “the nearest I can ever get to re mapping my old van, was to buy another road atlas”!He replied with “I know!
Those old vans don’t need a speedo, just a calendar!”

    How we both laughed!

  9. They stole more than just the engine ...[IMG][IMG][IMG]

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Another 1700 fan here, if only they were bigger. At 60mph hit a gradual hill and while both my mates in their 2L would loose speed, I'd glide past grinning... because in every other situation I was playing catch up.

  13. I have heard of 1700's with 1900s B&P in, one of the chaps I know at Volksfling has one, it seems to go like **** off a shovel, being a tintop and the fact he drives like a loony helps

  14. Tatra successfully sued VW after the war for nicking their designs.

... and you don't see any Ganz 911s, Ganz boxters, Ganz 924s, or Ganz anything else for that matter

  16. Trick is 1700 with its original box I reckon!

  17. If they did they wouldn't have sold many. These were designed as tradesmen/delivery vans, at the time 15cwt/1 ton vans were dominated by 1500/1600 petrol engines. The average jobber just needed a cheap to run reliable vehicle to transport their tool and materials around usually not a great distance from their base, a gas guzzler punting around town at no more than 30mph just eats into their profits. If they wanted a motorway burner nearly all manufactures offered a larger engine.

As the speed limits are being gradually reduced across the country, my vote goes for my lightly tuned up 1641DP T1, as soon it will be fast enough to break the speed limit on most roads.

It will already do over 70MPH and if they do reduce motorway speed limits to 60MPH (to be trialled soon in a few places), then its fast enough... .

Fine for the states, it’s 50/55mph, everywhere.

It used to be that slow, not now. a fair number of USA buses are hit from behind while doing 65...usually involvng mobile phones and or alcohol..
Even in 2009 I was cruising on the freeway off to Las Vegas from LA at 85 in a rather nice Ford Fusion, moved out a lane and immediately somebody appeared from over the horizon in the lane I was in and had to brake quite hard, flashing their headlamps wildly...
A bit like driving a Smart car on an unrestricted autobahn.

I have also smashed through a dip in the road full of slush and ice heading from Denver to Colorado Springs in the 90s on the freeway in the dark doing 65mph... scary.
