As some of you folk will know, the old boy died in June last year, and some Cousins were asking for any videos I could find them of his acting work.

This is one of my favourites, and always will be ...

Gets me every time ... But then I know the back story, and the man.
This was a 92 year old, three years into being a Widower ...

I do think he rather enjoys having the whole egg a tad too much ... but I guess for Cadburys that's the whole point

    Excellent!
When my mother died my dad chucked all her stuff away within days, visited her grave a couple of times then decided he was only doing that for the sake of form and never went again. Love/hate relationship, he once said he loved her in spite of herself. He was her carer while she spent 30-40 years with Parkinsons, so maybe it was a relief.

He was a "technical" actor, as opposed to a "method" actor, so that often presented limitations imho, but this advert is a bit more "method" than his usual offering because he'd been in the character's shoes ... although his role as a telephone answering machine in a Giff Gaff advert is pretty good, so maybe that's just my construction on it

I'm right in that place at the moment actually ... Thinking about my Parents' relationship as I set about clearing their sixty-year home for selling it.
I've heard of many "remainers" doing a swift clear out, but often from the angle of "too painful to leave everything the same" ... Better to keep a few key items than have a mausoleum?

My dad talked quite a lot about it when I prodded him. My mother was a posh "bit of a one" (when she was young) and did the dirty on him while we were toddlers. He could have bailed out then. He planned to do so when we'd all left home... at which point she was diagnosed with Parkinsons and again he stayed because he knew it would look like that was the reason. He was quite regretful (I won't say bitter) of an entire life doing the right thing at his own expense. Always wondered why her mother thought the light shone out of his arze.
He does what it says on the tin. If my dad had made that it would have been bin liners in the hall and a look of relief on his face. lol Maybe partly the get it done aspect, he's always been organised.

That last bit made me laugh  ... I guess it's like the "holistic" therapist's mantra ... No two back stories are the same

Parents are just people, the more I found out the more human they got. I have a much rounder picture of them now and I like that.

I'm thinking about getting a message to the (young) Director to thank him for "extracting" what he did!

When my old man died it was hard to know what to throw away, what to keep.

In my will its very clear - my books, music etc were worth something to me - do not assume they have any worth past that so get rid as you see fit.

I've known a few people who became actors and when I see the acting they are rarely if ever convincing, but I think it's purely because I know them so I see the acting as a separate thing - the difference between them and their character. Anyone I don't know, the character they're portraying is all I know. Your dad did a great loveable old fella, I bet he was as warm as he appears in the clips you've posted over the years. :)

Told my Son he's to only keep what is of interest or of use to HIM ... not all the stuff that I was planning on using, or getting round to using ... and there's plenty of that I can tell ya! :D

That's a good point ... I think I was overly critical of his acting when I was a kid because I could see the wheels turning in the Actors head ... and you need to know someone well for that.
He was an NHS-only Dentist for thirty years, and took time out when the occasional job came in. Think that was hard for him, having the "responsibility" of a family, so I'm glad he got more good work after retiring.
