Oh no! What's the matter? Those A series are very simple, probably simpler than an aircooled VW, so hopefully it should be an easy fix. I started out tinkering with Minis and Minors aged 14 so they must be easy to do :)

I think where it’s done so few miles over the last 10+ years, at the first sign of any usage all the seals and gaskets have fallen apart! It’s leaking oil from pretty much everywhere, but as the seal between the engine and the flywheel (?) has gone too, it’s an ‘engine out’ job rather than enjoying all the wonderful space to work under the bonnet with the engine in place.
It’s a good excuse to get the dynamo changed to an alternator, and also to add a couple of ‘extras’ in the form of a temperature gauge and a hazard light circuit.
Hopefully only away for a week… I’ve become rather fond of it!

Yes, that's not a surprise! The early crank oil seal wasn't great anyway, hopefully they can fit the later lip seal.

I think it's fair to say you were fond of it before you finally got it back?
That'll make you forgive it anything :)

Hahahaha, it fairly flies in comparison to the Bay as it is….. :D

  12. But your Bay won't suffer from woodworm ;)

Oi! No woodworms have been spotted in the vicinity ;)
Proper British madness… build an estate car that actually relies on a wooden frame for its structure in a country that rarely stops raining! :D

  14. A genius idea.

No surprise really that all the seals went if it hasn't been run for yonks. Who's fixing it?

Looking at the MOT history, it’s done 1300 miles in the last 16 years, so it’s short time with me has probably been a bit of a shock!
I was recommended a chap in West Moors by the Dorset branch of the owners club. I went down to chat to him… he’s got a few engines kicking round that he’s rebuilding, a couple of Minors having full restorations, plus various others things in for small jobs…. It’s always a gamble finding a new mechanic, but he seems a good bloke and obviously knows his Morris Minors.
    < fingers crossed >

I believe the crank seals on A series engines were pieces of damp string, possibly knicker elastic, so no surprise it's gone. Trouble is you have to hoik the engine out with a crane - we're spoilt with our air-coolers!

Had to leave the festival to swap empty gas bottle and decided to stop off for a quick beer out of the heat. Saw this rather nice estate car :)

That’s lovely! I do like the early Mk3 with the single round headlights. I do so want the saloon version one day (although an estate would be very practical!)

  19. Sounds like a great solution, fixed properly he'll be good for another few decades
Hopefully you insisted on a rebuild of the original lump and NOT a replacement !!!

For sure! I did ask at what point the costs of rebuild became higher than a 'ready-reconditioned' one, but Nigel the mechanic said it was nowhere near that and he would definitely be working on the original :)
It is really just gaskets/seals, but pretty much every single one of them! Sump off, head off, tappet covers, crank out, valve stems... hey ho!
I'm just hoping there's nothing lurking unseen, but I guess we'll cross that bridge if it happens.
There's a couple of other bits that need addressing - the usual perishing rubber boots, the exhaust heat shield, and something to do with the clutch seal... I did have a bit of paper which I scribbled notes on whilst Nigel was walking around and commenting, but needless to say I'm damned if I can find it
I also need to sort out the rubber seal on the rear doors at some point - the most likely culprit for the exhaust fumes I reckon.... on inspection it's just nailed on at the corners rather than glued all the way around, and there's a big gap where it's flattened with every nail.
    Fun Fun Fun :D
