    This morning I have mostly been changing this bit and yep, you guessed it, it’s been a complete @@@@

    do me a favour. If you ever happen to speak to an installer who says they fit Alphas, repeatedly punch them on the nose, let me know and I will send you a twenty pound Britannia music voucher.

    The number of garages that can't remove things is growing..glow plugs, injectors...

    I was discussing this just the other day with @davidoft . Local garage boss is a mate of his and couldn`t get his head around setting points and correct firing order - beggars belief how these places manage . In strides your locale hero and sorts it in minutes ..
    I suppose plugging a diagnostic in and changing the faulty item pays the bills but that doesn`t really make a mechanic in my eyes .

    Mechanics aren't the word :eek:

    I had an old (55 plate) Audi A4, took it for a service and they said the discs and pads needed replacing because of wear..no problem, they replaced them.

    A few days later the front brakes had a wobbly feel to them so we checked the discs with a DTI, sure enough they wobbled (they didn't look sat right).

    Phoned Audi, they said it was the discs warped as I'd not bedded them in correctly. Bit of an exchange of words and they asked how I knew. After an explanation they said neither did they have a DTI or would the technician know how to use one :eek:

    Said discs replaced (I also asked if they cleaned the crud from the mating surfaces..no was the answer) and the discs still juddered. Back to Audi, as I was taking the car home.

    They kept the car to check it over and put more new discs on, still not knowing how to use a DTI, I suggested to the mechanic he maybe ought see how a DTI works and also, clean the crud off the surfaces.
    He cleaned the crud and the problem went away having seen them throw two good / new pairs of discs away.

    As said before.. the mechanics don't seem to want to educate themselves with the basics.. :rolleyes:

    Disgusting , thing is they`ll have words with the `mechanic` , and after a couple of warnings he`ll be out the door only to be replaced with another Herbert . Changed discs and pads on Karens Beemer just before Christmas after the local garage said they needed replacing . Bought the bits for about 100 quid and had a chilled afternoon at the Manshed where they`ve got a 2 post lift - easy and saved about 400 quid . Annoying thing is they still had miiiilllless left on `em but ..... :rolleyes:

    If you must go to garage, find the oldest guy in the room.

    My van was running a bit rich at the MOT, older guy (an old VW hand) told The Lad to tweak the carb. He just looked at it, completely mystified. I think he was looking for somewhere to plug his laptop into.

    And don’t get me started on this modern “jive” music. It’s too loud, and you can’t hear the words.
