It was the centre post that was the problem, she wanted it in oak and it goes from floor to well past ceiling height holding the string, 3 kite winders and a step.
Took me all morning to cut the old one down then hollow the new one out and trim it around the stairs.

 

I was lucky in that respect....I could tell the wife where to go !
