I also was caught a few weeks ago doing 69 on M5 junction 4a . Apparently it was a 60 limit !! I never saw signs
Righto, started tinkering with it again last night and got it to the point where i could spin the flywheel from 12 o’clock round to 10 o’clock before it would go no further, I could then spin it back to 12 o’clock before it stopped again. Flywheel off makes no difference, dizzy off makes no difference, trying to spin it just from the fan end with nothing else connected and no plugs etc in - nada! So I gave up, put it on a trailer and towed it to an air cooled specialist nearby that I’ve used before. His first thought was that a/some retaining clips on the gudgeons had slipped off, he’s seen that a few times with new barrels and pistons being put in by fools with no idea (my words, not his!). Would make sense to me that, if there was now a clip floating around the barrel or trapped against the bore, I’d be able to spin it part the way round before it caught on the clip and went solid. That’s all obviously before he’s even had a look at it, so it might not be that, but I guess it’s as good a suggestion as any! I’ve left it with him. I’ve just got to the point that I‘m fed up not being able to take my van out and it’ll just stay that way if I keep fannying about guessing what’s going on. I’ll give it a couple of weeks and should have a working engine back and normal duty will be resumed. now, who do I need to speak to to hand my man card back?
Can't imagine a gudgeon clip would cause it - if one came off it would jam in the bore and seize solid (probably unlikely at starter motor speeds?) Is the dissy drive gear in correctly, you say you removed the dissy but this will lift the drive out when you turn over and could cause it to stop...
What's the chance you dropped something in the inlet manifold or carb or even straight into the inlet port as you built it up? A clip would have to get past the rings and it can't.
I can’t stand mess when I’m working/doing anything so everything was lined up, marked up and tidied up at the end of every day. It’s possible I suppose, I’d like to think not and the amount of messing I did when putting it all together, I reckon I would have noticed, but it’s possible.
Its going to be interesting to find out what happened. If it only moves over a small angle that is unlikely to be something above a piston, as most of the time a piston is far from the head.
Yeah, drive gear out too. It was a new driver and the gears on it looked OK, no damage on them at all.
Any updates? As coronavirus is yesterdays news i think we are going to need a new subject to worry about. Your engine could fit the bill nicely #seizedenginesmatter
Sorry, good people of TLB, I’ve been so tied up with the BBC and Fox wanting updates on the health of Dave that i haven’t had a moment to spare. It’s yet to go to press, so consider yourself incredibly fortunate people to learn... no updates as yet. I kind of dumped it on the guys lap, to be fair. He is a one man band, a very busy one at that, and I jumped in front of the three other people waiting to see him when I dropped it off. Could be a couple more weeks yet, but he knows more than me so I’ll let him get on with it! in other news, I bought a boat. Only a 3m RIB, but its engine wasn’t working so I got it for a song (considering I’m so bloody brilliant at fixing engines...). Got it running in about 6 minutes and I now have a boat. But no van. Or engine. But, a boat. Good times.
