Scat Volksracer Engine kits

  1. Some kits out there are good - like the ones "Speedshop" used to do, where all the machining was done and the parts were all matched up as a set.

This scat one seems a bit "scatty" IMO. For instance, it contains "lightweight racing lifters" and then also has heavy "chromolly pushrods" thus making the light lifters rather pointless. I dont rate the silicone seals to be as good as the original VW ones still available. I could go on but will stop here.

If your thinking of upgrading your engine I would recommend getting advice from one of the good engine builders, based on your own requirements and budget.

  2. thanks trikky. I'm preparing for winters 2332 stroker project (once my 1198 ducati is sold) and wondered if this lot was ok. Ive built many a performance (?) Lambretta engine and a few GSXR1000 bike engines, rebuilt my top end on my 916 so i thought i might build an engine for the bus. I'll look at the Speedshop stuff and give them a call.

Surely it cant be that hard to build a camper engine? People please put me in my place if I am wrong. :)

  3.
  4. From what ive read so far to get a low revving torquey motor the head doesnt want to have large valves. As they produce their power higher up with the torque following slightly lower on the rev range. So a nice head with smallish valves.. Have i understood this correctly?

Paul at Speedshop has kindly offered advice but I dont want to bother him too much whilst I faff around understanding things. Besides ive not sold the duke yet (I have a blat in France in Sept booked and want it for then)

Is the info on this site http://www.aircooled.net/ reliable?

  5. If you're looking at getting the "good" parts to build something like that, then speak to beetleragtop on vzi... he's the man I would go to for type 1 performance parts

Bags of free advice too
