Rumbleing noise

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Rustydiver, May 26, 2012.

  1. When on tick over the engine makes a rubbing noise, its not a knocking noise.
    When you rev it goes.
    Any ideas.

    It's a 2.0 type 4.

  2. Loose fan?

  3. alternator bearing?

  4.
  5. was your van fitted with the type 4 from the factory?

  6. rickyrooo1

rickyrooo1 Hanging round like a bad smell

  7. no like Ricky said its in a split screen.

i still ask daft split questions on here, cos your all more friendly on here O0

  8. in that case do you know if the pilot bearing has been moved from the crank to the flywheel? (it supports the input shaft for the gearbox)

could cause the rumble, if the input shaft bearing is on its way out in the gearbox

  9. Havnt got a clue, but the engines coming out in the next few weeks so will look, but last time I had it out, I can remember there was a bit of play in the input shaft, the bit that sticks into the flywheel from the gearbox.
    Im not very technically minded.

  10. from the back it should look like this...

you can just see the pilot bearing fitted to the flywheel

    (pilot bearing)

All type 4 (except the 914 type 4) had the pilot bearing fitted in the end of the crankshaft, so when fitting a type 4 to a type 1 gearbox, the pilot bearing needs to be moved to the flywheel so the input shaft is supported!!

  11. Now you got me thinking, I can't remember if there was one or not, even more of an excuse now to get the engine out one to look.
    I know it's coupled up to a 1303 gearbox.
That's the problem living other peoples conversions. I'm learning as I go along what bits are and where they are from.
