A rolling 40 year Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) exemption was also introduced for classic vehicles following last year's 1974 exemption. VED rates for cars, motorcycles and the main rates for vans will increase by inflation from April 2014. Tax free from next year for me
mine was built in 75 but registered in 76 so i think Ive got a bit of messing about to do before i get free tax :/
not sure how it works mate, the dvla have mine down as 75 but registered in 76. If it's the build date then you could be tax exempt in april this year.... sods law says that it has to be within the first half of the year or something stupid like only cars built on a sunny wednesday afternoon after tea break.
It's date of manufacture not registration, but you'd need to prove it to get tax free. This is good news all round anyway.
Its build date. Mine was registered mid-may '74, however I got the birth certificate, and it's was manufactured Sept '73. So that will mean she will be tax exempt from April, even though she was registered in mid '74
Mine was registered in September 74, as it's a Westy I would imagine it was built before April 74...is the only way to prove this the birth certificate?
It's in today's budget: 2.153 VED: classic vehicle exemption – The government will introduce a rolling 40 year VED exemption for classic vehicles from 1 April 2014. (Finance Bill 2014 and future Finance Bills) (39)
Hmm, looks like its worth me getting proof of registration now. Happy days, two or three tanks of free petrol.

Classic car nuts and drinkers have done pretty well under this government. Labour will probably reverse it all if they get in next year.
