Rocker cover bale wire replaced!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Stan, Mar 12, 2013.

  1. After an annoying leaky rocker cover, I replaced the cover with old one from stock and switched the wire with an old one and of course new gasket but still leaking!!
So a new rocker cover and wire from Machine 7. Fitted and so far no leak?
I think all I needed in the end was a new bale wire.

Good grief how tight new ones are, you forget how much 40 year old ones have stretched.

So top tip rather than new covers (unless your old ones are rusty or those useless alloy ones) just buy new wire!

    Lesson learnt!

  2. if you can do them with your fingers, then they aren't tight enough!!

I usually use a cranked screw driver to pop them on and off

  3. Are the bolt on covers any good?

  4. i got some new scat stainless covers with new bales and a new cylinder head...
the new cylinder head is german, but the rocker cover is loose as hell! the bale can be put on and off with 1 finger..

    any ideas?

  5. Apparently the bolt on covers are supposed to leak or work loose? Are the stainless
Covers painted black or polished? Ideally you should use the boggo black covers since they aid cooling the oil? Not sure how accurate that is but I always prefer stock stuff anyway.
Are the wire bales stainless also or black? If stainless maybe they are softer an stretch more? Try bending the wires a little with pliers (off the engine) to pull them on a bit tighter?
The problem with repro /aftermarket parts is you never know how close tolerence they are compared to the original?
Avoid putting any sealant on the gaskets btw, just a light smear or grease on them.

  6. Slit a 30mm length of 6mm bore copper pipe and crimp it round the bale at the two points where it touches the cover. That should take up any slack.

  7. the stainless covers I have are these...

its like the holes where the bales attach to the cylinder head are too far forward. I may buy an original bale and try that, or have to bend the hell out of the scat one.

  8. ill try that first though... cheers

  9. Yes good idea,to take up the slack. see how it goes worse case get standard ones.
