So, inspired by the westy vs devon thread and the split thread I thought i'd see why peeps think the vw hierarchy exists? we all love our lates but argue on the best type, some of us even want a split or an early or a t25/4/5 - in fact some on here even own such things - so now in a bid to create the answer to the ultimate question of life the universe and everything we will find out once and for all what's best. one vote each so choose wisely - if I can be arsed (unlikely) we will re poll with shorter odds - once the splits and t25/t4 etc get voted off...... the vw factor.
I voted early 'cos i'm getting on a bit and I want one as old as me...... but i'd like a diesel van or a nice motorhome as well, that said early gets my vote.
As I've already owned a Splitty, currently own a Bay, have just sold a T3/T25 & now have a T4 as a daily driver I'm in a bit of a fix. I'd happily have another Splitty ....... as long as it's a barn door panel van like my original I'd happily have another T3/T25 ...... as long as it's a Syncro Doka with the NATO canopy or perhaps an Oettinger WBX6
Always wanted a Splitty then had one and didn't like it. Had a late Westie, which I naively thrashed to death and then gave away. I've had numerous T4 and T5, all performed faultlessly but also without 'soul'. My X-Dresser X-Over hates me, regularly tries to kill me, frustrates the life out of me and I love it. My LB Doka, now that's going to be AWESOME!
i have a crossover but its first name was 'splitty fund' as i hoped to sell it to buy a split. that never happened as i fell in ove with it. and although i'd still like to own a split it's based on nothing more than the look of them, so i guess i can'y really comment on which is best as i don't know what it's like to own any others. i voted splits purely for the look.
Didn't have any preference, until Volks world gave Ricky James his own column , Got frustrated reading about how great splits are compared to anything else . One month he wrote that the only true wv van was a split van and he didn't like any other model, but if he had to chose one it would have to be an early. I think splits are one of the best looking vehicles that has ever been built but i prefer my 73 bay , and would not want to swap. the age of a van means nothing to me, the whole split vs bay thing is a case of "Im better than you because my van is older" ,Something i don't subscribe to. The guy has even caused divisions in the world of splities by organizing event purely for barndoor splits . I don't look down on anybody because of the van they drive , but i don't look up to anybody either.
Sorry but I am unable to vote in this poll because all the options aren't there. Now if there was O - sANDYbAY'S van - Because it's brilliant and I love it, and it's on my driveway right now. Then I'd join in the voting.
To be honest, I'm not fussed. Split, early, crossover, late or T25. They all have their redeeming features. I like all of them. They are all great. Even brown ones. If it makes you happy then thats fine by me.
I think I read about this once - it's also open to those who aspire to own a barndoor split, so that they can fawn over the object of their desire. Oh, purlease. I mean, they're all VWs, aren't they?
When I owned a barn door splitty it was just another old sh*tbox Kombi, it was 18 years old (the same age as me at the time) No one paid any attention to the large engine bay door, you were only "cool" because you owned a Kombi, not because it was something that would become a rarity
Although I voted late bay for me any bay will do nicely, early/crossover or late. Don't like splitty's and t25's look, how can i put this 'very 80's'. t3 and t5's are builders vans. Although splits and bays were builders vans, i never saw them being used in such a way so don't have that attachment to them. Bay all the way!!!
I remember similar in my Scootering days. I always had old GP200's. Which along with an old SX200 or TV175 was the splitty equivalent. Some people would mock people of P Ranges (P200E, PX200E) etc. Every group has them. People who think they have some form of superiority due to their vehicle being 'special'. They are annoying twerps and i am indifferent to them as people. Mods are the same. I couldn't give a Marmite how long your side vents in your jacket are. They don't help me tune the carb in or replace the clutch cable on the side of the road. I like splitties. They look nice. I'd have one. I'd also have a bay which I do. I just have whatever comes along at the time. I can afford a splitty. We chose Percy instead because he was there when we were looking. Destiny if you like. Elitism is there just to help those with inferiority built in at a sub-concious level feel better about themselves. Me I am superior and I know it. I don't need my vehicle to reflect it and everyone else is as superior as me anyway. Except them. They're twerps. Splitters
I like Splitties but could not afford one. I like Earlys and Xdressers but the sleeping layout does not suit my family. T4 and T5 are probably more sensible (reliability and comfort) but do not invoke the same level of smile or stupid grin that I get when I see a pre 80's VW. Jury's out on T25. So Late Bay for me until kids have gone, I win the lottery or I become more sensible
