Replacing super viking gas struts

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by yorkshirecampers, Apr 4, 2012.

  1. Morning all

Has anyone ever replaced the struts on a viking/super viking? Good, bad, horribly difficult? Tips and pointers?

Ours are knackered, had to get Woody to...erm..give me some wood to keep the roof propped up at the weekend. Don't have time to get into the garage before next week's camp so was thinking of roping the father in law to help me tackle it.

 If it's a beast of a job, then I'll probably resort to the broom handles for the week though.

    Mwah as ever

Did you give this a go?

  3. Waiting for it to stop raining!

It looks quite easy, only a couple of bolts, and it's on the outside so I shouldn't have to mess about with the bellows. Think the hardest bit will be prising the original bolts off.

Will let you know how I get on, if it ever stops raining...no droughts in West Yorkshire!

  4. I did the struts on my Moonraker which seemed hard work first time I fitted them as I had to compress them to get them in place. Later I realised that if you apply your prop and stretch the bellows open a bit more than standard, the struts just fit straight in. I've no idea if the Viking is the same though.

Sodding rain. I need to get under but lying on me back in a quagmire is no fun

  5. Hello,

Please let me know how you get on..
We have a super viking and fight to lift the roof.. and wedge broom handles in..

As you say it looks straight forward... but just read another post on here that mentioned the new struts going straight throught the fibreglass :'(

Look forward to reading how it goes..

you seriously need to ditch that mac or turn the spell check on lowie......

  11. no different to doing the gas struts on a hatchback or estate car. only tip really is to do 1 at a time. if you take both / all of them off the whole roof weight will be unsupported. even though the struts wont hold the roof up, they are probably still holding a lot of weight

Don't underestimate this. The struts are longer than the space they fit in and and have strong springs to hold the weight of the big roof.
