Ready For Engine out, Exhaust heat deflector fell apart

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by keithandtrudystype2, Oct 28, 2012.

  1. I removed the tin ready to get the engine out, the heat deflector is now a rusty heap on the floor, can a replacement be sourced and are they neccesary?

  2. Not quite sure what you mean by "heat deflector".

  3. Its fitted between the rear tin and the exhaust (under the tin). I will photo it later.

  4. Be careful with it... it's one of those items that likely as not has asbestos in it!!

If you want a heat deflector, make one out of a bit of aluminium

  5. It DOES have asbestos in it. Be very careful sweeping up the dust. Best to wet it thoroughly, put it in several layers of poly bags and take it to your local waste place and declare it. Use a mask. Kept the kids away from it.
You can't buy a replacement, have to make a double layered metal one yourself. Second hand ones are dodgy.

  6. Yikes... will dispose of this carefully then, is the majority vote that something is needed in its place?

  7. A lot of people don't have one which why they don't recognise your question. Probably a bit of the usual VW engineering thinking. They put it there for a reason! But lets see what others say.

  9. mine was in the back of the bus when i bought it - was going to sand it down, paint it and put it back on - does it really have asbestos in it - just looks like a rusty piece of metal to me?

  10. Has anyone got a photo - not sure if mine has one...

But it's not the dangerous fluffy "blue" dangerous insulating asbestos which is more like rock-wool. Don't worry too much, bag it and chuck it but don't shout about it unless you want a big bill.

I had an asbestos garage removed - they charged £100 and wore white suits and masks to look impressive, but within1/2 hour had taken off the protective gear (they thought I'd gone out) and smashed it up with hammers and chucked on the back of the lorry - they were approved asbestos removers but knew their onions. Loads of it was left in fragments all over the place when they left. Just an excuse to charge more.

  13. i was thinking of making a heat shield to go above the exhaust,

with some cement board and some ali,

i never knew that there was one there originally though.... :-

  14. Too many people have played the "don't worry" card with asbestos and they are mostly in crematories including cowboy removers. Blue asbestos kills you for absolutely sure. White asbestos just kills you. Most "asbestos" roofs were made with syndanio board, a kind of proprietary asbestos cement. It is not dangerous unless you break it up, when it releases asbestos fibres.
Manufacture was banned in the UK in 1985, but it is only since the mid 1990s that brake shoes without it have been the norm.
You can still buy syndanio boards but they are now asbestos free.
Am I still on the trivial pursuits forum?

  17. any you guys know any of the symptoms of this kill you disease? just that i did stacks of work with that stuff in 90"s and never had any protective kit (was unloading sacks of the stuff) dust everywhere , and now doc is blood testing me endlessly in attempt to identify wot is causing the symptoms i"m experiencing.(0i"d forgot babout that job till asbestos was mentioned on here .ta 4 any advice.

  18. Really do hope you don't have anything seriously wrong mate. If you were working outside in the freash air you may not have been exposed to the quantities that cause trouble.
The illnesses asbestos causes are Asbestosis, Mesothelioma, Asbestos-induced Lung Cancer and Diffuse Pleural Thickening. All chest problems.
For good professional information check out this site http://www.asbestosis.org.uk/
    Best wishes

  19. the good old `Swindon disease` my old man said they used to have snowball fights with the stuff when they were apprentices in the railways ......
