Radiator mounting

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by 3TNC, May 12, 2014.

  1. I know, I know air cooled dont got no radiators!!!
Any suggestions about mounting a rad on the bay - was initially going to mount this in the engine bay but due to how far back this has to go there will be no room.
I am thinking maybe underneath with a metal air scoop / shroud over it to direct the air onto it.
Any other thoughts will be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers all

  2. Mines underneath with a scoop

  3. @Keith.H any issues with stones piercing the rad at all?
    Obviously a concern!

  5. Not on the road yet, but it was roughly in the same place before with no issues

  6. Cool, will have a look when we get the bus back here.
    Cheers again

  7. @Keith.H once again, many thanks for the info.
I will have to pick brains when it comes time to construct ducting, air scoop, etc.
    Cheers again

  8. Looking at your pics and having a read up on the links you kindly sent through they seem to almost be world's apart - the links talk about all the physics and nascar / racecar cooling and yours seems like (no offence intended) a basic set up - def liking yours!
Do you have a fan that's operational and if so which one - looks tight for space hence the question.

  9. Yep, twin fans on top with a sensor plumbed in to the water pipea

  10. Proper slimline fans then?
Are the sucking the air through the rad as per normal setup or pushing the air through it towards the floor?

  12. This is mine:

Actually that's the winter setting, the scoop has a second hole either side for it to be lowered down a bit so the opening is wider and lets in more air for the summer setting. I did a lot of surfing around and reading up on this before I took my van to Fellows, and I think the underslung radiator is probably the best solution without chopping a hole in the front panel and putting it there (which would be ugly). Someone on here had a conversion done from somewhere with the radiator in the back of the engine bay and because it didn't work as an effective cooling position, got the radiator put underneath the bus for better cooling.

  13. @baybirmingham that's the sort of thing I was thinking about - forgive the question but does this direct air to underside of rad therefore pushing warm air towards bus floor? Or am I (as usual) looking at it wrong and being stupid?
    Cheers mate

  14. No, you're spot on. The scoop pushes air up through the rad, and yes, it then warms the bus floor a little. Not noticeable at speed, because the throughflow of air pulls the airflow backwards and behind the bus. It also has 2 kenlowe fans on the top, and they pull the air up through the radiator when the switch is activated, which I think is at about 92 degrees.

  15. I take it the cooling is good, doesn't overheat when stationary / in traffic?
Sorry for all the inane questions

  16. My take on that bit of it, is that when stationary especially in bumper to bumper traffic a normal water cooled car has no air rushing through it except whats being pulled through by the fan.

  17. So nothing above the norm then. If so then this is the way to go.
I have a rad out of an old, now scrapped, car that only had 3 months use so will look to use that but think the standard / matching fan will be too deep so maybe a slimline Kenlowe or two.

  18. That's cheap for what you get but will just look at the fans to use the old Vectra radiator as I already have it - begrudge throwing it as it cost me £100 trade.
Will have a play with an adjustable air scoop as per baybirminghams little affair and get a frame made to hold rad and fan(s).
Hope the bay will be transported back here beginning of June and can't wait to get started!
The other rad I will need to mount on the bay is the intercooler as it's a TDi - wish me luck as I was never any good at Tetris!
