Questions from a newbie

  1. Hi all you kind experts out there;)

I have a 1975 Devon. Probably a silly question but I have a coil of wire at the front clamped to the left of what I believe is affectionately called the totem pole. When pulled and pushed it sounds like it is opening and closing some flaps - presumably heating or ventilation. Should the wire be attached to anything or is leaving it as a coil normal?

Next question. I have removed the non working clock from the dash with a view to seeing if it is possible to fix - although I have heard that they are loud tickers so may regret it!
A voltmeter confirmed it has over 12v going through it so guess the problem is going to be mechanical. Staining behind the glass indicates water or liquid ingress at some point although it has pooled at around 4 o'clock so guess it wasn't in the camper at the time unless parked on a very high kerb! Anyone got any tips on what to d or look out for?

    Many thanks:thumbsup:

  2. Do you have a picture of the coil of wire?

Have you checked the earth on the clock?

  3. could the wire be opening the cold air flaps in the grill?
but then again, without a pic that wire could be operating anything..
afraid i cant help with the clock issue, as mine doesnt work either and i havent a clue, so this thread could actually be useful for me too :)

  4. I don't but will be going to the camper at the weekend so can take a picture then.

I checked the voltage across the terminals whilst it was in situ so assumed earth was good.

    Cheers

  5. Is your clock an electromechanical one (likely made by Kienzle) or a quartz one? Has it got a strip of tape on the back with a +/- adjuster underneath?

Do you mean here instead of a cable? ImageUploadedByTapatalk1376995158.546907.jpg

  7. Thats the one except mine does not have the black sheathing and is not connected to anything:( I presume that it should be connected to something up under the dash??

  8. It says VDO Quartz-Zeit on the front. No tape on the back and nothing that looks like an adjuster.

    Cheers

Could be heat exchanger cables, front flaps or speedo!

  10. Thanks.
Definately not the speedo as that is connected and works!

  11. It's operated by one of the red levers on the dash, and it should be as per the above photo!!

And double check the earth!! :)

Connects to the middle lever on my dash!

  13. Thanks guys.

Looks like I had better get a new cable and put it on my "to do list".

I have bench tested the clock and still not a tick or a tock:(

Best of luck with that - i hear they are not available so you have to cut down a bigger one. but yes it goes to the middle lever on the dash to operate the flap inside the totum- closed = heat to feet - open = heat to w/screen.

  15. Mine only has a small lever on the side of the upright/totem. The dash levers control the fresh air intake (two green for left/right) and the hot air (two red levers for the heat exchangers, left/right).
