Have you read the small print? I'm pretty sure these spindles can only use late discs and calipers, is yours a crossover or a 73?

I've watched the clip now - have you fully tightened the bolts?

I think so. I have never done this before. Maybe I haven't pushed the bearing etc on far enough. How do I make sure the whole assembly is on the spindle properly? do I need to wind the hub nut on further and is there a tool for this? It's the one with the thread and the Allen bolt to lock it on.

The nut is for adjusting the bearing, read the book. ;)

I'm reading the Bentley as we speak.

i don't have torque wrench and its not actually a nut so what do I need to buy for this? I will buy a torque wrench tomorrow, but which size is a good all rounder for a bus? 1/2"?
Just reading the torque settings now.

  10. you could just grind a bit off the caliper...

    Forgot your bus was brOwn..:D

    Other side is on

Just about to put disc etc back on to see if it rubs here too.

So the other side rubs too. Spoke to big rich at coolair and he said he had another account of this problem and they had to put a washer between the caliper and the spindle to centralise the disc.

These are girling calipers I take it?

A washer between the caliper and spindle? Rather you than me.
The disk only has to miss the caliper by a mm (or 2 for luck) and all's good, I'd tidy the inside of the caliper like @lost-en-france suggested then bolt it up as VW intended..

I will have difficulty putting new pads back in though. I don't mind modding the caliper a little, but if it is too tight for a new pad to go in on one side then what?

Buy the pads for the early calipers?
I did look at a caliper before I posted and will now concede that the caliper only expects to meet the spindle in two places about the size of a washer, I just don't like the sound of it. If your brakes ever act oddly at least you'll know to check them for tightness first. :)

A spring washer would probably prevent the loosening but has less surface contact area than a standard washer. What is the size anyway M12?

Hmm. 19mm spanner would normally be M12, but...
    1 x 14mm hole
    1 x 16mm hole
I'd take the bolts to a washer shop.
