Proposal for a sandpit area.

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by stevesplatto, Sep 28, 2011.

  1. We've had some threads that have developed into difficult discussions on complex ethical and moral issues. Those discussions have, on occasion, generated heat that soured the vibe of the forum and have therefore been blocked by the Admins.

I agree with the admin's actions on preserving the atmosphere of this forum but there are sometimes issues that deserve some discussion even though those discussions generate heat and passion.

Would it be a good idea to have a members only sub-board off General for moving heated discussions to?
Instead of blocking the discussions they could be moved over to that area insulating them from General Discussion.
    What do people think?

    Cheers

If an area was introduced, like the one suggested, things would still get too personal and thats not what its about on here...

Obviously much better to hide and therefore ignore the issue..............

Like it or not, there are some pretty horrible people on here. Give them enough rope and they'll hang themselves. (Alternatively bury your heads in the sand and pretend its not an issue)

I'm with Steve; it works fine on JK.

I've got to say that as a relative newcomer here some of the recent threads have left me not wanting to be here, but I don't see that moving them into another area is going to help on that front.

I'm just stepping back a bit and maybe just looking at the technical stuff.

The trouble is, removing any remotely controversial thread all together, also gets on peoples tits. (Well, mine anyway). We're not children, we should be allowed to discuss things but oh no, the mods decree otherwise.

i don't honestly think theres a need for it , if we are all sensible , respect each others points of views and don't use inflamatory words then whats the need , surely we are all bright enoug to converse without sarcasm and rude remarks , and we shoouldbe able to enter into the spirit of a jokey thread without jumping up and down demanding order .

Perhaps we need a speakers gavil , order ,order ;)

Enough seriousness now - i like this emoticon C:) don't you Rick ?.

some of that came across wrong not sniping at anyone but , we do not need big brother just self restraint ! :-[

  12. I havent seen this discussed on the forum as yet, (might have missed it).
Surely our opinions are worth considering Marowak?
Seems a little harsh to attempt an end to discussion in capital letters like that IMHO.
There are some negative 'ist' views put forward from time to time on this forum that are offensive.
Strikes me that just blocking those discussions and disputes is a blunt instrument.
Some off us want to challenge and indeed some of us want to defend.
Like having a boxing ring rather than smash up the bar

It certainly was not a racist thread: yes, there was a racist comment by 1 person, but he was immediately put back in his box.
If you start deleting stuff because of 1 post it's rediculous. Why not just edit the 1 post?

  15. Thing is poptop, I don't respect someones point of view when it's racist and I believe those views should be challenged. Equally, people should have a right to defend. We can get things wrong on here and a poor choice of words can give the wrong impression.
On the thread that was blocked this PM I thought itwas right to pull it but not to end it. hence my suggestion for a sub board which will enable people to not get involved in impassioned debate to avoid..

    Cheers

Simply editing the offending comment would have sufficed.

Nothing like using a sledge hammer to crack an egg though!

  17. I removed the thread today - there were a number of reasons for my doing so.

    - Some of the content could be 'deemed' racist and we dont want that to filter through into TLB
    - There was a lot of swearing - too much to go through and change ... and people trying to be clever by misspelling swear words to show them is not acceptable
    - The thread was heading in the direction of a slagging match and again thats not what TLB is about

We are currently discussing ways of keeping on top of this....but its meant to be a friendly forum about VWs. Not a place to air all your views and comments.

Generally - if you don't like the way TLB is - Leave ....

We don't want new people coming along and seeing threads like this .... 99% of the site is perfect - but every now and then 1% in general chat gets out of hand.

  19. Thanks Bay Dreams - we've all seen what happens when these things get left and it's best to nip it in the bud ....

As I say if you don't like the way TLB is run - jog on

    1) It couldnt "be deemed" racist; it was racist.
    2) Maybe there was a bit of swearing so 1 - 1
    3) It wasnt heading in the direction of a slagging match
    4) So there are subjects that are fine, and ones that are off limits now? Do I take it you'll be removing all the non VW stuff?
    5) That looks really good from a mod. "If you dont like it leave". Nice. I really dont like how you deal with things some times, but will I leave because you told me to? I dont think so.
