Propex query...

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Samwise, Nov 13, 2013.

  1. Evening all, as the dark nights have arrived my thoughts have turned to a Propex install but I wanted to get some insight first.

I'm a fair weather camper so can't really see another overnight stay in Sandy taking place until clocks get changed again, (only been camping twice since we got her in September) but when we went camping at the beginning of October it was a bit nippy at 3 in the morning, especially in the pop top, therefore is it worth the expense, how much use are you getting from Spring onwards or shall I stick with a hoodie?

I've a late Westy but with no underslung yank tank, I would like to run it off the propane under the cooker, but be able to run both at the same time if needs be. Does anyone have this set up and is there a gas regulator that can mange both?

I don't fancy 2 tanks as the Propex will take up some valued space as it is. I'm a bit clueless on the gas front so anyone's experiences and advice would be gratefully recieved

i have a propex running off one bottle and regulator with the cooker - works fine, as for useage i think the amount you camp you're wasting your money.....

If you are a fair weather camper I wouldn't bother.

What's the gas bottle type @rickyrooo1 ? I've got 2 X 907's & am also considering a Propex but was concerned that the 2.5kg bottles won't last long & will work out expensive. In reality, could you guestimate the amount you have the heater on, on average? & whether you think it is expensive to run. cheers

i'm running a calor patio gas bottle 5kg just upsized from a calor 3.9kg, the space issue doesn't worry me they are bigger than the campinggaz and cheaper, no idea on if i think it's expensive to run i like to be warm and it's less than a nights drinking for a good few weekends camping with it on a lot.

  6. We find our 6kg propane bottle lasts for ages. Propane runs a little hotter and is better in the cold too.

  7. you mainly stick them on for half an hour or so before you go to bed...just to take the chill off
some run them first thing for defrosting and to warm the cab up a bit...
They don't use much gas tbh...but if you;re considering fitting one, I'd look into options for fitting under the bus (same for an LPG tank)...neither are easy to loose in a bus and take up space when not needed....they can also be quite noisy if you don't spend time designing the system...

i set the thermostat and let it run all night to maintain temp, i've got mine in the spare wheel cupboard behind the driver seat so it's not too noisy.

  11. Cheers fellas, don't get me wrong I will be out every weekend after the Marmite weather goes, but I like some central heating in the bus to take the chill off, especially for the kids. Is it noisy under the bench?

JK usually do 10% off in December or have these on offer so you'll do we'll to wait a bit.

I got mine last year and its still in its box!

  14. I ran mine all night once....woke up with ice cream head...got up to make a brew and almost passed out...it was bordering on 90 degrees three inches from the roofo_O
not if you stash the kids in there as well...small children have good sound absorption properties (in winceyette pajamas)

Mine is under the bed - shares a 907 cylinder with the cooker on a 2-way tap. I would have a good look at mounting one under the van if I was looking now. I must admit that we don't use it a lot when camping because we look out for hookup off season.
