Problems with our TV, anyone have any ideas?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Robo, Dec 5, 2013.

  1. Everything was fine until I pulled the TV unit out to plug in the Xmas lights, that's when the TV started freezing and stuttering.

Had a look at the cable and removed an extension piece which seemed loose and also re-fitted the plug onto the end but still not working properly!

We have a digital aerial on the chimney which feeds 3 TV's in the house via separate cables running from the aerial, both TV's upstairs are fine with no problems so it's either the TV or the cable running to the living room, so grabbed a spare tv which we use as a monitor plugged it in and tuned it in and worked fine so started looking at new TV's :)

Then tonight the little tv starts stuttering so now I think it could be the cable I'm baffled though I'm even thinking one of the sets of Xmas lights might be causing some interference but not had enough free time to fault find by switching everything off etc. so thought I would throw it out to you guys and see if you have any bright ideas?

Oh & I've had both sky & cable over the years but due to cost & the fact the kids can watch cbeebies & Mrs Robo watches the soaps all on free view I don't get much time to watch anything else so it's a complete waste of money although I wouldn't be having this issue I suppose!

If I can't sort then we will have to call out the tv aerial man!

  2. Maybe pulled a connection loose, or damaged it a bit i recon try a new lead from tv to box/wall, or try a new end piece on it

Turn the xmas lights off see if its interference

Try a DVD to see if it is the tv signal, or the tv

if the other tellys are doing the same its the weather if not you've broke your telly.

  5. Double check the end you fixed, it takes just one strand of the outer to touch the inner and its fooked. It will interfere with the others as they are linked !! Could be the weather but coincidence ???

  6. Other Telly's fed from same aerial but separate cables (aerial is one of them 4 way jobs) this all started last weekend so not recent weather related!

Cable comes from aerial down the roof, down front of house, along entry and then thru wall (no wall socket) and straight into the tv!

Gonna pick up a new end and try that, it's looking like the cable as I connected up another tv and although it was ok for a while it's now twitching!

  7. Don't buy the cheap ones with the plastic outers, you would be better off using sellotape directly in the back of the telly :D

  8. Is aerial ok ? i diss wind?

  9. ^ BR may be right. In a stiff wind, the tress touch our TV antenna, and the picture goes pixellated.

Wind or trees (or both). Or aliens.

  10. Yep aerial is good as the other Telly's running off the same aerial are perfect!

  11. I agree & wouldn't, had almost convinced Mrs Robo we needed a new (bigger) telly :D. But blew it when I tried another telly on the same cable as dodgy one & that's stuttering too!

There is a bit of head scratching going on this end, you should see the splinters I've got!

  15. Are the Christmas lights working ?

  16. ^^^ unplug christmas lights.
if the aerial has a booster one cable wont affect the others. If the other tvs are ok it must be the cable. cut an inch of cable off the end and put the connector back on, they'll be a guide on youtube if youre not sure how to strip the end of the cable. If youre thinking of getting a new tv you can get one with freesat hd or if youve still got you sky dish freesat hd

Don't forget there are 2 connections on your aerial lead, it could be the one at the aerial end, especially if the cable is not secured properly all the way down. I've seen the cable wear right through from rubbing on roof tiles as well.

All Xmas lights on this morning & little telly was working fine, I didn't have time to try the big telly though, now at work pondering!
