Problem with accelerator pedal

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by simon, Jul 12, 2020.

  1. I have a problem with the accelerator pedal sticking down, when I try to get full throttle. I have a butty's bits throttle kit and centre carb pushing open drla dellorto's, When the pedal is disconnected everything opens and shut's as normal, but when the pedal is attached and you push it right down to the floor it sticks not returning back upright. Looking at the pictures what do you think is wrong?

I thought the pivot for the accelerator was supposed to be under the floor?
Also, your cable coming out of the conduit at the back looks like its binding on the metal grommet? It could just be an optical illusion.

  3. I've just been looking at butty's bits and the bracket on floor is round a the opposite way, so my question is which one is right

Your pedal hinge to floor is the wrong way round which has moved the pedal forwards. This is also why it's so upright.

I think it’s an early vs late thing.
Earlys has all the gubbins underneath the floor, lates just had it under the carpet.

Also you have bent the threaded rod between the two joints. Thats because the top joint is not circular but gets larger radius as it nears the threaded rod that does the pushing.
So it is jamming and getting bent.

I built a similar arrangement for about £16.., and I had to fit a plate to the top pivot bolt to hold it away from the pedal, as it tended to slip up the slot..... also note the pedal angle.

    As @zedders says hmm.

Wider view. Yes there are about 2 carpets there...

  7. It is. Surprised you can work the accelerator without getting cramp in your foot

What they all said. /\ your bracket is back to front.

Mine is as close as possible to the stock Z shaped wire in terms of dimensions, so it had to be made from M4 rose joints. The Buttys Bits one looks a bit large.

  10. Thanks for the information, my bracket has been the wrong way round for years, I was replacing it after the bracket had broke, I was replacing it like for like. @mikedjames by the looks of your photo you bracket is further away. Does anybody know the right distance it should be as I've had the floor replaced and I think it's not right.

I replaced the section of floor under the hinge as one day it all fell over. So the hinge position on mine just looked right when I re welded the old hinge back in.

  12. I don't suppose you could take a picture with a tape measure in place could you? As mines been fitted with the bracket the wrong way round and I don't want to mis drill my floor again.

    You don't need to redrill.
    Knock out hinge pin
    Unscrew bracket
Screw it back on same holes but other way round (which is how they ALL fit).
    Hinge pin back in.
    Job done.

  14. I've done all of that @zedders, but I'm getting less throttle opening on the carbs now. That's why I'm thinking the bracket's in the wrong place.

  15. Have you tried hooking the cable into a different hole on the dangling lever under the floor? That’s really what sets the “stroke”.

Is that part of the Butty kit? Stock just one hole, I had to lengthen mine to get the dell full throttle.

  17. No. Late lates have no need of bettys butt. My stock dangler had two or three holes from the factory. Took a bit of experimentation for my dells, including tweaking the endstop under the floor.

I bet you weren't getting full throttle before then as the VW part must still move the same?
I had to extend the arm the cable attaches to, this is necessary for most aftermarket carb installations with our particular year VW throttle arrangements.

I too had to increase the travel from 17mm stock to 21to22 mm for a progressive . Instead of a longer lever at the front, I went for a 1:1.2 ratio lever at the back so I could keep a straight throttle cable, more like the dual carb linkage.

On my setup the lever at the pedal end goes from full "up" when the bar going across the cab stops, to the lever going deep into the stock recess pressed into the floor when the smaller M4 rose joint bottoms out as the stop at the top of the pedal digs into the carpet.

Under everything, the movement is like the Buttys Bits mechanism picture you show.

If you flatten the pedal by reversing the hinge and bolt the top rose joint tightly at the bottom of the slot in the pedal you should get a bit more travel before the pedal bottoms out. Hence my spacer plate to make this happen, otherwise when I stamp on it the top rose joint moves up the slot...
