Power from leisure battery to dash?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by bootsam, Aug 29, 2012.

  1. I want to run power from my leisure battery fuse box under my RnR bed to the dash to power the hifi and fag lighter. Anyone recommend a route for the wiring?

    Ta very much.

Try and keep away from the walk way areas. Try and get it as far to the wall of the opposite from the sliding door. Sort of along the path you'd wire speakers in.

  3. Its the part past the drivers door that puzzles me Stu. Ive loadsa wire getting right over to the opp wall isnt a problem. I'd also like to wire the interior lighting to my box too.

The previous owner wired rear speakers in and the wires are loose under the mat but it looks gash. I'd like to do it properly.

Never considered going 'under' the bus. MIght give that a look as long as the rain stays away.

Down through the floor and up through the inner valance (existing holes - easy).

  9. If you can find my bus resto thread I've got some pics of how I did it on mine, all internal and you'll need to get under the flooring but it looks nice now it's finished.

  11. Under the van in some flexi conduit, then up through the front panel where the existing loom comes in. Easy. Fuse it at the battery end.

There isn't really a path through the interior.

  12. My leisure battery fuse box is under RnR bed. Thus ive managed to get it inside the panel opp the sliding door and out behind drivers seat. Although I wish I'd read the last couple of posts before i did it. That sounds better but I am working outside and its raining heavily. Anyway Ive some existing speaker wires going along that route so I just followed it. Once the carpet is on you wont see it. Oh how I wish I had a big garage and a vehicle lift. :)

Ive run 2 core to the front. Ive noted that the previous stereo was wired to the interior lighting circuit direct. I say wired when I meant scotch clipped. Ive cut that section out now as its was a right mess and joined it back up. Minus the stereo red wire. I will then connect that to my new cable. On a side note when I was testing the stereo I noted that it would not work unless the stereo was touching the metal of the dash. Is this normal?

I havent traced where the earth (black wire) from the stereo has been connected to yet. I'm having a sarny.

I also want to wire my interior light to my leisure battery. My rear is connected to the front interior light. (its a devon) via a couple of plug in wires. Ive found which wire powers them.

Usually I have to disconnect my main battery as it goes flat after a few days left standing (must have a short somewhere, i suspect the stereo). Thus I want most stuff to go to the leisure battery.

I went from the leisure battery fusebox under the R&R bed through the C post, then behind the long panel, up the B post, across the top of the door and down the A post. The rear speaker wires follow the route of the heated rear window wiring – up the A post and above the doors and windows into the hatch.

The cab light is still off the main battery but all the other interior lights and power sockets are supplied from the leisure battery. A relay supplied the stereo from the main battery with the ignition on and from the leisure battery with the ignition off.

I followed the route VW used for the wiring where I could and all of it was done from inside the van, no need to get wet, you don’t need a garage or a vehicle lift and none of the wiring is visible except for a short section of the speaker wires at the hatch hinges.

It took a lot longer than 30 minutes though.

  16. Right. My fag lighter is installed on the dash now. Thus I can plug in my iphone to charge and use the tomtom on it. :) I bought one of those hole arbour sets that says it cuts thin sheet metal. Like feck it does. So I ended up drilling circular array of holes and then set about filing. Half hour into the filing, sweating and swearing it suddenly occurred to me that Ive got a bloody dremel. 5 mins later its finished. Wired up.

I spent most of the day repairing bodged connections to the loom that I found. Plus fixing a couple i did after too much keen filing.

I'll connect up my main cable to the fuse box tomorrow and then my interior lights, fag lighter, stereo etc will all be from the leisure battery. :) Then I'll wire in my spare trickle charger as per Mad Frankies How To.

If its dry tomorrow I may reroute the main cable underneath as per Zed's & Snotty's recommendation.

To be honest most of the time I spent exploring and finding stuff out about the bus after taking bits off and trying to take bits off. Especially that bloody panel opposite the sliding door. The table holding slot thingy was a pain as the securing screws were dead headed and the things its screws into also stopped the panel coming off as its was secured behind the panel!? I trimmed round them with a stanley. I've got a new set of interior panels from Delilah to fit in the future. (Once ive got some welding done in the future to both arches and sill)Besides the auminium slot bracket thingy will secure it anyway.

My back aches. Time for a bath. I'd have a spliff too if i could bloody find some. I'm 46 ive no chance. :) If I was 20 i'd get some easily. This is a disgrace. I dont drink. I'm a moderate stoner. Anyway thanks for all your help. K+ to everyone.
