Portable solar panel / Battery bank

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by AndyC, Jan 4, 2016.

  1. We just have 2 batteries and changeover switch, use one til flat then switch over to other and as @mikedjames we carry battery booster pack if away for a week to jump start if needed but normally its fine.
Parked next to posh motorhome last year and he had calor powered battery charger onboard, but way out of our budget. :)

  3. I have solar panels to fit to my Westy roof. Just don't want to drill it/haven't plucked up the courage to drill it yet

  4. You and me both!

And I can't think of a neat way of running the cable to the rear.

Wish I had an early..... ;)

  5. mine are going on the rear on the hinged roof. Holes through to top bed area and then down into westy side locker then to battery, shortest and most direct route.

  6. Ah right, I had thought about putting it into the front cargo area.

What about getting a flexible panel and using Sikaflex?

  7. Mine are flexi and I have tiger seal but not sure how much I trust it, although I have stuck car spoilers on with it.

Then its just a few small holes for the cables, sod it might just get on with it

  8. Alternatively you could try a
Power bank, which is probably ideal for festivals
You can either charge them before setting off at home or on route while driving.
My daughter bought me one for Christmas via Primark @ £6, yet to be tested

  12. @pkrboo Got my two power banks today.

Do you charge yours by USB or is there a faster way?

  13. @AndyC

I plug it in using a mains adaptor, I would use a minimum of 1 amp charger preferably 2.1amp

It will take forever charging via a USB port

  14. Do you think a 2.5a iPad charger is too much?

  15. Shouldnt be because a device will only pull the current that it requires.

An adaptor that can provide upto 2.5A will still only provide what the device connected to it requires.

    Make sense?

Also check what it says in the instructions!!

  19. If you're at any of:
Cosmic Puffin, Bearded Theory, Watchet, Chagstock, any of the ones called Something-Else or a few others come and find the Something-Else Tea Tent Solar Stage and within it the sound desk, we ask 2 quid for a full charge regardless of how long rather than the fiver for half an hour the rip off stalls ask for and while you'll need your mains you'll still be getting your electrickery from the sun via the solar array on the truck :)
