Please talk to me about AGM leisure batteries?

  1. With lifepo you can use 100% OD the capacity so a 100ah battery has the same useable capacity as two x 100ah FLA leisure batts.

  2. But twice the price, yet half the weight... a different set of compromises..

  3. But more than 100 times the life

    FLA is 200 cycles

LiFePo4 5000 cycles before it goes to 80%capacity

You're of course right and you know how I feel about lithium but you are the trail blazing guinea pig. There is an additional complicated set of BMS that goes with them and even if you build your own you are still looking a 5 standard FLA batteries before you see advantage. I'm nearly there but if I've managed an FLA for 4 years, that's 20 years of payback.
Weight is the big one for me tbh

  5. Weight makes you faster downhill. Only ever drive downhill.

  7. No, drop in replacements lithium batteries have built in BMS's. And they are getting cheaper, and tbh the cheaper ones are fine for what we use them for.

We'll see. I hope so. I appreciate the Bms is integrated but that doesn't mean they won't fail:thinking:

  9. That's where buying a good quality one with a good guarantee corms in. Battle born for example.

Given my last wet leisure battery lasted 9 years and the new one cost £160 I’m sticking with wet.

  16. I’ve given up on em as I keep killing them! No LB for me. May just stick another lead acid starter battery in there for a bit of back up.... that said I’ve spent the last 7 days on hook up.... no battery issues at all lol!

If you wanted to 'convert' an alternator to charging an AGM or a wet cell battery fully - Sterling sell little boxes that boost the field current to convert the running engine plus alternator into a proper 50 amp battery charger. It is a fairly simple retro fit. As usual I paid £100 for mine about 20 years ago on my boat, they are now about £140 ..

    Or about £360 https://sterling-power.com/products/alternator-to-battery-chargers-up-to-130a?variant=878066555

This is different technology. It simulates a low charge battery and boosts the energy flow to a higher voltage , in fact an inverter which has to cope with all the power from the alternator.

The cheaper alternator regulator version only boosts the field current taking over from the regulator when the alternator voltage is lower than required for proper charging.
These will not play with smart alternator regulator junk but work on simpler dumb systems like ours.
