Perseids meteor shower peaks tonight

  1. Heres hoping for clear skies:rolleyes:

"The Perseid meteor shower is already underway and will continue through Aug. 24. The peak viewing will be Aug. 11–12 when stargazers could see upward of 60 meteorites flash before them per hour.

According to Astronomy.com, the Perseid Meteor shower has some added bonuses this year: It will occur on a night when the moon is in its waning crescent phase, which means the moonlight will interfere only slightly with your view of the meteors."

"The Perseids are one of the most prolific and best-known of the meteor showers and the Perseid Meteor Showercan be seen in late July and through August each year, with the maximum Perseid meteor activity on or around12/13 August.

One advantage of the Perseids meteor shower is that it happens in the warmer weather of Summer, which makes it ideal for anyone interested in seeing their first meteor. You can see meteors at any time of year but, for a day or so around the date of Perseid maximum, there is a high chance of seeing one.

Meteors in a shower appear to come from a particular area of the sky, We call this area the radiant. The Perseidradiant is in the constellation of Perseus, just below the familiar ‘W’ of the constellation of Cassiopeia. In August this can be seen reasonably high in the north-eastern sky later in the evening."

  7. Had a look out of the window before going to bed - clear sky but too much light pollution round here. And cos it was a 'school night' couldn't really go out into the countryside to have a proper look.

  8. We laid on picnic blankets in the garden and watched for about half an hour - saw about 15 or so. Was magic as it's th efirts time my 2 girls (10 and 13) have seen shooting stars :)

Will look again tonight from a campsite on the Isle of Wight :)
