outer rear bearing troubles

  1. hi all

I'm having trouble getting an outer rear bearing in :( .....its the 2 part style bearing (the inner sleeve comes out)

I fitted hundreds of bearings on different things over the years, but this is the first that has stumped me

I've measured it with digital verniers and it seems to be 0.4mm too big .....is that normal and it should compress its self in or is it possible it is one of a dodgy batch?

I've been hammering away for hours and it just wont go

    ......any tips for this one?

  2. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

That doesn't sound right. They fit it quite easily.

  3. hmmm might try and buy another one

.....I was a little suspicious as it wasnt in a sealed packet like the inner one was (which fitted reasonably easily)

    thanks mate

  4. sounds about right to me... how're you trying to fit it?? Spacer on bearing, hammer on spacer??

I've fitted a few recently, and you hammer the crap out of them (almost) and then they just pop in!! Easiest way to do them is with a press though!!

  5. initially tried just with a hammer resting on outer race and hitting first hammer with a second one (inner race not fitted at this point as it slips straight through)

then tried a flat bit of metal over the bearing and beating the crap out of it...that didnt work

then tried a 1/2 block of lead on top and beat it ....that didnt work

once kids went to bed I had to stop making noise :(

.....might have to take it to work on monday and either use their bearing insert dollies or put it on the bench press

just one thought, the outer doesnt seat on a coller, how do I stop it from goining too far in?

  6. you just press it in so it is flush with the outer face of the hub

It's also why it is that much harder to fit :)

  7. cheers dude :)

  8. I tried stckig the bearingin the freezer today

    ......that didnt work either :(

think I mightbuy another bearing to see if I have the same problem before I try to press it in

  9. :p

  10. Bearings and hammers don't mix, hitting a hammer with another hammer is not great practice either , a bearing will measure near as damn it dead size , the outer bearing is limited by the spacer between the inner bearing on how far it goes in . Your not trying to fit earlybay bearings are you ? I just did mine and they went in very easy
