Out of the game

  1. Same here. Nobody wants to have a crappy old van cluttering up their workshop for months on end.

  2. Engine code CJ is a 2.0l from a '76-'79 T2, according to the samba.

  3. yeah that’s correct. Suppose I do worry what’s underneath those  seals I bought for the sliding door and tailgate don’t fit like they should because of those kinds of repairs. Would love to fix that stuff at some point!

  4. With it being a 79 I thought that it shouldn’t be too much of a big deal that the engine was T25. Also Way Out Westy did my carbs and he didn’t even mention, I feel like he knows his stuff. Maybe he just sees that they can’t all be perfect and doesn’t mention some stuff. Over 45 years there’s always going to be less than ideal repairs etc. I’ve been trying to fix them since day one whenever I can!

That looks like the average 40 year old camper tbh. Yes the sills have been bodged, but so have many that are happily camping every weekend.

Let Dunc have a butcher’s, to see what it really needs, and what can done as and when. I reckon the first garage just didn’t want to get involved, so scared you off….

Bit of welding up around the front end and possibly sills too and a tickle on the rear tubs extensions then get some mud flaps on. Motor could do with a clean up and a seal or two while it’s out and check some of the crank case bolts etc. The steering flexi is the most dangerous thing on this van and a decent new one will make the difference between driving a ropey old clatter bang and driving a very decent car. You might want to start a group buy for a Lares set up as was done recently on here. The difference a decent one makes is incalculable <<< that’s hard to say without your teeth in lol. There is a group buy over on the Earlybay for a Delrin bush for your gear change that you might want to try and gatecrash, tell Mike that Ozzie sent you. I was expecting a lot worse from your first post. I’m with the others on this and ask for a second opinion from someone that is well known on here, hint hint hint. I’m not saying they’re taking you for a ride, but I think they’re comparing with fairly modern vehicles that don’t have the same sort of rust issues. All or at least most of these vans were worth only five percent of their purchase price at some point in their life cycle and had repairs accordingly just to get through an mot and squeeze one more years motoring out of it.

    Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,second ,,,,,,,trusted,,,,,,opinion required :)

  7. Thanks Ozzie! Apologies, but what is a group buy?

A group buy is a thing where some innocent person thinks it’s a great idea to buy a good quality or hard to get or hard to import a certain product or even just to get a discount perhaps just saving large postage costs. So by asking on a certain forum, does anybody else want a certain part, you should get some sort of a decent deal on that product. Then the innocent person is inundated with texts or P.M.s or messages from well meaning but inept individuals that between them could make the simplest procedures seem like a distant memory. Peeps are great at not quite doing what they’re asked and inevitably try to do something just slightly different and make it way too complicated for words instead of adhering to the requested format.
In short, someone thinks they can get something good for lots of members by arranging and buying usually ten or more of the same item and collecting the money and paying and reposting and and and,,,,,

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,, usually works out fine in the end :)

  11. That's not too bad at all, think about how plumbers suck air through their teeth before delivering the killer blow to your wallet.

As Ozziedog says, second opinions could be sought.
