Good morning. i have fitted a VDO pressure gauge to my 1600 dual port. im getting 30psi at 56mph. as soon as i hit the slip road it drops to about 7psi and the warning light comes on. its wired through the vdo sender not the oem switch. after coming off the motorway pressure stays very low, could be doing 25mph and getting barely 10psi. I'm running 20w50 oil and it doesnt run hot. i have a tiny leak from the main seal Sent from my ELE-L09 using Tapatalk
Have you got the right sender for the gauge? If you have, your engine is tired. You could cheer yourself up with some sender plumbing - add a T-piece and original low pressure sender for the light. Does it stay at 7psi at idle or drop lower? Lastly - how do you know it doesn't run hot? Oil temp gauge?
they where a matched pair from a mk1 golf. I already have the t piece at home, so going to hook up a mechanical gauge to double check and reinstate the standard switch. Basically, you get to understand when its hot, don't we all. the smells and touch, all Tinware intact too, it seems to be running optimum temperature. Sent from my ELE-L09 using Tapatalk
A lot of the aftermarket switches for the dash light seem to trigger at too higher pressure compared to the VW original. As zed said, T piece and original dash light sender seems the best way to go, then use the matched aftermarket sender for the guage.
I think it’s 7psi when the warning light starts flickering. Many folk have posted on here that the oil light does flicker on idle with a hot engine, usually when they are using a thinner oil though. As said so long as it doesn’t drop below 7psi on idle and you have 20psi or above with a few revs on you should be ok.
If it's any help, Bentley quotes the following: oil pressure at 70C and 2500 rpm is 42 psi with a wear limit of 28 psi. This is for SAE30 oil. When I first fitted a pressure gauge it started well but then I got worried because after a run seemed to get much too low. It's very temperature and engine speed dependent however. As stated the oil light will come on early using the VDO sender so if you can tee in the original sender you can be much more relaxed.
My oil gauge when engine is hot & cruising at about 2-3k rpm can drop to 20psi or so but then will go up to 35psi I recon due to the oil pressure valve diverting the oil through the cooler and dropping the temp of the oil.
this is all awesome! i knew there was a reason i bought the T Piece Sent from my ELE-L09 using Tapatalk
Assuming your gauge is working properly, that isn’t too great. Likely a tired engine. If you’ve got a rev counter, 10psi per 1,000rpm is decent. The pressure relief valve will top it out at about 3bar (~42psi).
This is most likely a somewhat worn engine or perhaps an oil pump with a worn cover and a worn engine. Yes the VDO combined sensor puts the pressure warning light on at 7PSI which means it comes on while the pressure is still acceptable. 56mph in 4th gear is about 3300 rpm, so 30psi is a little low for 10PSI/1000rpm but not dead yet.
unfortunately this was a fresh rebuild and barely done 500 miles, just done 300 mile oil change. I'm going to hook up a mechanical gauge tomorrow to see what that says. if it matches the vdo we have issues. the rear seal has given in, he said he fitted a silicone one, one thing i have learnt, is to never, ever trust anyone to sort something. i only did this because work was hectic and i just wanted to swap my ancillaries onto a long block. crazy. This size oil patch dropped during a 10 minute rest at services. Sent from my ELE-L09 using Tapatalk
i am beyond fuming, the engine i built 3 years ago has never, ever let me down, the case cracked mid summer so i thought id chose the fastest and easiest option. Sent from my ELE-L09 using Tapatalk
It's not uncommon, most unfortunate - comes from people using the oil cooler as a handle over the years I suspect. I used to scrap cases like that when they were cheap but it's possible to sleeve inside the cooler supply bores and the cooler doesn't have to be very tight.
if id known that now, it'd of saved me so much time, stress and money Sent from my ELE-L09 using Tapatalk
As close to standard size as you can find, avoid the 28mm and 30mm pumps. Make sure the pump body isn’t loose in the crankcase and the gear end clearance is correct.
