Oil Leaking Damaged Case Urgent Help

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Bay Dreamer, Aug 10, 2022.

  1. Urgent help please. Absolute nightmare. Haven’t driven the van in three weeks while doing work to it etc.

Went for a drive and came back, opened the rear engine lid to check everything out and there is oil *******ing everywhere.

Just drained the oil and the leak is coming from a very small short crack/gouge.

The previous owner had a recon engine fitted no that many miles ago. It don’t know if there was some kind of JB weld/bodge type repair over it that has now come off today.

Wondering what my options are to sort this now. It is just in front (going towards front of vehicle) of the engine support bar and is like a round lug. The area where it is looks black.

I’m sorry I can’t rotate the images on my phone.

  2. Picture are the best may be a plug come out or loose which can be tapped and plugged but need to see pics first.

Where the round blob of oil starts on the round lug/gallery is where the leak is.

  5. There should not be a hole there :(

  8. Indeed. Is it a crack/hole, or just the light? Certainly shouldn't be anything there.

  9. If it's chucking oil round the engine bay, check your breather isn't blocked. If it is, it can force oil out behind (technically in front of) the pulley.

  10. This is not a hole or the place anything is coming out, there seems to be rough casting round that piece though almost like they recast that part to add an extra layer of metal.

Please add an arrow to one of your pics showing exactly where it leaks. It's possible you could drill, tap and threadlock a small setscrew in the hole if it's just a drilling for an oil passage used only further in the case.

That tiny little nic you see going diagonally is where it is coming from. That points directly downwards to the ground.

Sorry to clarify, I noticed the oil on the floor not in the engine bay, it was just chance that I was checking something in the engine bay and looked down to the floor underneath.

  13. I have used that before on engines and after a few heat cycles I find it leaks whatever you are fixing. I just don’t trust it in this application for long term use.

The furthest round blob of oil you see in this photo on the bottom right is where that little nic is and is the only placing it is leaking. Because it is an oil passage it was spraying onto floor when engine was running.

I don’t understand how or what caused this…

Drill and tap it then. If you use a strong thread locker it won't leak or come out. It's a dead end of a drilling inside the case.

  16. I had though of this, not sure if the heating up and cooling of the engine would loosen it out even with threadlocker. I think it is a viable idea but my friend I am staying with is not keen on that solution for some reason.

  17. Is this not an oil passage for the oil pump to go around the engine?

No that's in the other half of the case. I think it's theblanked off hole for the oil pickup, but then I can't see why it would be squirting oil out at pressure. Either way, if you drill a hole you'd know how thick it was and could cut a screw to the length so it didn't protrude into the oilway (though I honestly don't think it would matter if it did, because oil isn't going anywhere from there?
The red line is supply from the pump.

Having looked at more piccies, I'm sure it's the oil pickup hole. Here's a theory - there are two diameters of pickup where it fits into the case. It's possible the rebuilder had a large one for a case that needed a small one and reamed out the hole. I'm guessing that because I had an engine built where when I dismantled it I found similar and cut the hole bigger with a router bit... the very case in my photo above - that was a new ali case with plenty of meat, yours is a lightweight original and likely the case it thinner there... or could be just bad luck i got a knock with something, road debris, stone, who knows?

  20. Drilling and tapping for plugs is common, seal just fine , i used aluminium plugs, its the only way to clean galleries properly so shouldnt be any different there.
