Cheers Paul, didn't know that, I have the wheel fitted and thermostat, is it worth putting some sealant in the hole in case the threads are worn?
Nah... it won't be worn unless someone has been swinging on it and stripped the threads... Not much else than can cause a leak in that area!!
not sure if its not coming from the filler pipe connection to engine area and running down, the drip is from the underside just backwards of the strainer
Well... I think all my oil leaks are now sorted, I very much suspect that the dipstick bellow will expand and leak again... No oil underneath so very very happy
There's oil on the tins behind the engine, even after a short run. I also cleaned out the centre hole on the fan (end of crank?) and this now has fresh oil in the grooves, so leaking here too. Is this a crank seal gone?
Well I built a 2056 a few years ago... was my first porsche cooled motor, and I spotted it on that!! How's your leaks now? Sounds like the oil seal on the crank has gone behind the fan!!
It's common if it's an old seal that is breaking down... Not massively hard to do, just the taper fit fan carrier on the end of the crank can be a bit hard to get off!!
This wasn't obviously leaking when the engine came out originally, whereas the gearbox end seal was. Is it engine out?
The fan carrier is proving to be reluctant to move. Is there a special puller available for this as standard pullers are not able to do the job so far.

Found this on Youtube, using the threaded holes to pull from. Makes it much easier to produce a home brew puller. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNSgat-Q3-k
