Oil changing, while Im at it, on me 1800 I haven't taken the gauze filter out for a couple of changes cos I don't fancy shearing that dreaded stud that holds the pickup, I change the canister filter. I was wondering if there might be any long term problems with my approach??

No real need to go into the gauze unless your engine was rebuilt by a silicone sealant loving fiend.

There should be nothing circulating that will be big enough to be stopped by the gauze. It should all end up in the filter.

If something goes badly wrong, and big pieces appear then the gauze helps the oil pump, or if there are still valve stem seals waiting to drop off or things that got dropped into the engine then it will stop them damaging the oil pump if they catch in the gauze.

  3. Don't bother.

  4. Not worth the risk frankly. When we first got our bus I thought as it was an unknown entity I'd give it a full going over just to make sure and changed it but I needn't have bothered as it was completely clean. Not done it in the ten years since, just gave it regular oil and filter changes.

  5. The few times I've had the strainer out on my type 1, there's been nothing in it. Should be even better on a type 4 with a proper oil filter.
