Just under 152,000 tonnes, the APL Vanda is surrounded by a eight tug boats this evening (Saturday).

It is close to the area where theMV Hoegh Osaka ran aground in January 2015 .

The ship left Le Harve, France at 2.49pm and was expected to arrive in Southampton at 8.15pm.

Satellite tracking appears to show her coming to a stop at Bramble Bank at around 10.10pm this evening.

Red Funnel’s 2315 Cowes to Southampton Red Jet and the 2245 Southampton to Cowes were cancelled “due to shipping movements”.

A 250m exclusion zone has been set up.

**ud 12:04am** The ship has moved. Some tugs standing down.

  5. Its a well marked channel, bar a mechanical breakdown or other serious incident, any mariner worth their salt should be able to navigate it safely with todays navigational aids.

  6. Power failure so was a controlled soft grounding on the Bramble, no hull damage. Eight tugs took her off.

  7. so it was a mechanical then! I went up and down the Solent all the time when I was on the Navigation training ship.

  8. ^this. Everybody knows about it. Must've been some kind of failure for them to ground themselves. Does provide employment for Solent tug drivers, tho'...

  9. Indeed it does. Where would we be if these large lumps thought they could career around confined waters with impunity? When we caught fire in the Solent not only did it provide employment for half a dozen tugs but also heroic overtime for a large number of workers from a shiprepair company.
