Have you got a bike on the back? we drove round France and rarely took our bikes off, they had a good holiday! but we felt it broke the ice with the locals even tho we spoke crap French ;D.... we did try hard tho but with a very crapa accent ;D i had heard about the breathalysers and that is good info that foreigners dont need til Oct as I was going to buy for our drive through in Aug- If its the same as here in Spain, hi vis, warning triangles and spare bulbs are the order of the day- I would suggest, due to experience, some water and an umbrella for shelter incase you break down in the heat of the day. Bon Voyage
As of 1st July all motorists and motorcyclists in France should carry an unused breathalyser, this doesn’t just affect the French - it applies to all drivers, there is an €11 fine for not having a breathalyser but the fine will not be applied until 1st November so you could ignore the law until then and simply accept getting you knuckles wrapped if you are stopped. Legally you also need to carry your driving licence, the V5c (original, not a copy), insurance documents, hi-vis vest that you can reach without leaving your seat and a warning triangle. A fire extinguisher and first aid kit could also be required for use in an emergency to avoid breaking the law about assisting in the event of an accident. You need a GB plate and have headlight beam adjusters and although a set of bulbs is no longer compulsory you can be fined for driving with a broken light so that really means you need to carry a set of bulbs. Warning signs for fixed speed cameras are being removed and it is illegal to use radar detectors but the latest Tomtom alert of a general speed monitored area is okay. Note that approaching cars flashing their headlights are probably not showing appreciation of your car/wife/partner but are more likely warning you of a speed trap. Enjoy your holiday, this is a great country but jeez it can be hard work at times, don’t blame me, I don’t make the rules I just live here.
merci i will now get 2 breathalysers (sorry for thread hijack) the other things you have pointed out are as per Spain -I didnt realise France was so strict too. I still like the expectancy to help your fellow travellers ..... Vive Le France ;D
Does anyone know if they have the beam adjuster stickers at the ferry ports? Just realised I've forgotten to get them (and a GB sticker)
You can usually buy the GB stickers at the little shop by the port (I've brought one before) also at motorway service stations but not sure about beam adjuster stickers
Same as darren , im not sure they do beam deflectors , have you got a halfords on route they are open tomorrow.
you have not forgotten your gaffer tape ,works on everything especially headlights and crafting a gb sticker.. ;D
These guys got as far as Italy without their V5c. http://campermoon.com/2012/07/06/hold-the-celebratory-croatian-shnapps/ It’s not worth the hassle (and extra cost) to ignore the rules, daft as they might be. Good tip from lef, useful stuff gaffer tape but I use aluminium tape left over from sticking that shiny bubble wrap insulation together.
