In view of the thread on todays Mech/Tech forum regarding driving an aircooled VW with a broken fan belt, wouldn't it be a good idea to have a high profile"Sticky" thread explaining that amongst other things, that driving an aircooled VW, when the red generator warning light illuminates, its as serious as an oil pressure warning red light illuminating, you imediately pull over and stop! I wouldn't drive any car with a broken fan belt be it water cooled or air cooled especially if it drove the water pump or a cooling fan I might if it had a temp gauge but it would have to be for a dam good reason and my eyes would be fixed on the gauge. same as if my breaks did not work or the wheels where falling off Doing a list would be hard as how far to you take it
ditto that! It's impossible to instantly know all the ins and outs of driving a 40 year old van straight away. To be fair I stopped the engine as soon as I'd noticed which was just short of arriving for work. Slowly but surely...
I knew someone who did 15 miles after breaking a fan belt in a splitty... got to the pod with smoke pouring out of the back, HT leads had melted to the engine tin, as the tins had got that hot, then wondered why it wasn't running properly anymore : I offered to give it a look over for them, but I was told that it was fine, and to not bother myself
Not quite so bad doing 3 miles from stone cold in winter as belt breaking when it's doing 60mph on the m'way in summer.
