No power to coil when cranking over

  1. I think a series diesel landrover is by far the easiest :) they even put a pull latch on the grill in an inviting manner to anyone who fancies a look

  3. Does it continue to run once started this way and the temporary wire disconnected. You may find this is the case as the contact in the position that turns the starter over may be shot yet the one in the run position is ok. Meaning that once started you disconnect the wire and it will switch off on the ignition. Ive had this when a replacement switch wasnt available I fitted a pushbutton temporarily.
     
  4. [​IMG]Saw something similar to this at the weekend but it was nicer - on a chrome plate and was thinking of fitting one in the engine bay anyway. Add a key switch or an isolation switch with the removeble operating lever and other than put the bus in neutral theres no need to go to the front when engine faffing. or install in the glove box or similar . But replacing the switch is best!

    early mini is best, it has a button on the starter solenoid swap a wire on the solenoid press the button and off you go, no steering lock on early cars either and a handy latch for opening the bonnet from the outside too :)

  6. Paradox - that link doesn't work for me.

    Start the bus using the temporary wire, then disconnect the temporary wire and yes bus continues to run - when it's warm you can turn it over and it won't start but as soon as you release the key the power is restored to the coil & it'll just catch as the engine is still spinning over a bit on the starter motor.

    Can I run a temporary fix by scotch-locking the 2 relevant wires together running up to the ignition switch - these would be the ones leading to the ignition position and the cranking position on the ignition switch?

    If so, anyone know the colours to look for?

    I am taking the bus for a rolling road tune up tomorrow morning & I didn't really want to leave a wire permanently connected to the coil (as 1 - engine continues to run even if you take the key out & 2 - the positive wire on the coil also runs the electric fuel pump so don;t like leaving this connected).

  7. I used to have to start my old beetle like this after snapping the key in the ignition. I also had to leave the door unlocked for a bit while I got round to fixing it. Unfortunately a couple of my mates knew about this so every so often I'd come out of the supermarket and it'd be parked elsewhere or the wrong way round to the way I'd left it...

    a quick easy solution is like holmsen has done, switch on the dash. If you scotchlock 2 wires together you will have the same issue as putting a direct feed, what i do is run a wire to the rear light so when you switch off the lights the engine stops , you can scotchlock to that wire, it will have a grey wire with a black or red trace, its only temporary, but putting a wire to the coil all you have to do it pull it off. easy :)
