Hi peeps, i wanna buy a new carb for the bus, but i dunno which one to get, do i get the empi 34 from vwheritage, or get the euromax make one from coolair? which is a better option? Only reason im going for a new one is because im cheesed off with trying to get my current one working properly. Its a stock original solex, with spindle bushes done, and a full rebuild kit.....and still wont run properly...... Im not bothered if the new carb only lasts a year, i just want it running and driving properly..... opinions please.....
yeah, i know fella i've always dealt with him when buying anything, always got everything from him at coolair, and i'd be more than happy to again, but i just wnna know which carbs are better?? Im guessing the coolair ones, as they all seem to be well into their dubs over there, and it seems they wouldnt sell it if they wouldn't be happy to run it themselves....... its either this or i buy a 2nd hand set of better carbs, as the engine is a 1641 with engle 100, stock exhaust etc....
Before you spend on a new or refurbed carb can't you swap yours with someones who you know is working? Then you can see if yours works on another engine and if yours works with a proven carb? If it comes to buying a new carb then I wouldn't buy a new one, I;d get an refurbished one. They are usually cheaper than the new ones. I've heard mixed reports about the new EMPI ones but they seem to be the new purchase option if you're going to go that way.
... I sent my stock Solex off to Laurie Ellis last year - it came back looking like an object'dart. Runs beautifully - Laurie rebushed it by reaming etc etc. Only downside - it cost £210 (ouch). Laurie is starting to age in years a bit (I think he is 76) so I don't know if he is stil doing carb refurbs. I have got his telephone number knocking around the house somewhere ...
put the money towards a good set of twin carbs with the poor MPG you get out of a badly running bay engine a good set of twins will pay for them selves very quickly
2 recommendations. 1. Lawrie ellis for refurbing a pict 34-3 solex. (dont get a bocar one or empi) 2. go for a set of genuine, not empi, webber 34 ict's ot DRLA 36's I now have a set of 34 ict's they transformed the running of my bay. better MPG and power.
what should i expect to pay for a set of 36's with manifolds and linkages? nad for weber Ict's just so i know??
I would not buy an Empi carb, got a new one and thought all would be sweet, but the accelerator pump didn't work...took it back and got a refund so went back to the original with reversed accelerator pump linkage..it works with a massive flatspot so I just have to get it tuned once I put a vacuum advance dizzy on..soon :dog:
i have just fitted a kafer/solex pict 34 that clowie gave me , i read years ago that they were rubbish but this one has transformed my poor running into smooth running - very good and i think they are quite reasonably priced new
I'd take your carb off again and give it a good scrub, soaking in carb cleaner and a good blow through with an air duster. It's the many little passages in the carb body that tend to get bunged up, together with the smaller bits (like the aux air jet that lives behind the screw on the RHS), Then set the idle speed and idle mixture to the standard settings. You won't get better than an original Solex, unless you do go to twin carbs. They normally respond well to a good scrubbing.
