Wheel cylinder leaking on rear brakes ...so ordered new set of shoes and 2 wheel cylinders . The shoes were only about 3 year old and don't do many miles at all, comparing the the shoes to the old ones, ...looked like the old ones hadMore or the same amount of brake matter on the the shoe . Fitted all up, the bar and pins as it's a 72 73 set up the handbrake lever seemed loose fitting and was, as the handbrake lever was knocking on the hub .....sorted it by fitting thin washers on the pins then fitting the horse shoe clips ....sorted problem . What i don't understand is the handbrake was good originally with 6 clicks ..yet it needs adjusting a lot which surprised me leading me to think i have bought poor quality new shoes ...the shoes were purchased from Just kampers .
Also ..has anyone up graded the brake shoe lay out from crossover set up to later set up and is it a doddle more to the point ...because the set up i have now is carp .
If the shoes were not that worn before you probably had to unwind the adjusters a long way to get drums off.. probably not wound them back in enough.. did you stamp the brakes a few times to center the shoes and adjust again .. a few times. ..and put the arm bit back in the right hole.. ,that one foxed me for a while...as I put back as I found it.. wrong!.. My JK rear brake shoes decided to come unbonded on holiday last year, the replacement shoes weren't great, so I had some ex Mintex brake guys bond and rivet some of their friction material on ... the difference in the lining material was unbelievable.
Didn't have to wind the brakes off to get the drum off ...just slid off ..not mega loose mind . the crossdresser set up is really carp and would like to up grade to 74 ..79 set up as they look more sensible .
Dont see any reason you cant change the whole set up.. adjusters and cylinders are the same .. think someone here did it a while ago but cant find it. Has the notch in your spreader bar worn? A spot of well in the bottom makes it back to normal.. Sent from my SM-T580 using Tapatalk
I think generally it's all worn holes in the bar and such ...it's all rickerty ,you can get new ones but they were worse and seemed to be made of weak monkey metal . handbrake cables i assume are the same length and the wheel cylinders .
If I was having to buy new spreaders etc i'd probably swap over.. they're cheaper pads!.. don't think any difference in position would be more than the adjuster can account for.. if any.. Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
Missed the hitting hub line. . Top one is how I found it.. when I put it back like that it hits hub.. Bottom one Is how I think it is supposed to be.. and it works fine Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
Top pic - oh dear! Bottom pic - the lower spring is the right way round but the wrong side of the shoes. The long prong of the spring is supposed to discourage the handbrake cable from falling off the lever - like that could happen!
Good example of checking if 'how it is' is 'how it should be' .. with many PO's and iffy garages.. Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
It is if you have 72-73 model years, the only way to know is to look. They all essential assemble the same way and the handbrake lever should end up in the position in deefer's second picture. If you searched the Samba site there will be a thread showing all the varieties and years, but after 40-50 years and with the fact that any correct assembly of shoes and levers will work with any backplate, springs and 5 stud drum...you could have anything by now.
