Nearside, offside, which side?

If you're on the continent the offside side becomes the nearside side doesn't it?

I blame Brexit

 

If they used "Port" and "Starboard", everything would be much clearer.

"I'd like a panel for the starboard beam, please. Ahaaaar!"

 

But there's Klingons on the starboard side
