Loaded the van and went to move her to hitch the trailer and just wouldn't fire - the battery isn't the best so i'd put it on charge at 7 this morning to give it a hand, wound over for ages and no joy wasn't even firing, tried a couple of times and no joy, so i said come on Bolly don't let me down! the starter was going a bit slow by now but i got the hint of a fire up and so i let the key go counted to 10 and tried again and she started! now she's sat since Oct 5th but other than a flat battery what would cause the lack of starting? i'm wondering if somehow the fuel is draining from the injection system while she sits? i wouldn't think it is a loose wire or anything because i didn't touch anything at all just stayed in the seat so the only thing i can think is fuel. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else who has fuel injection has heard of this problem - i know they have a 5th cold start injector, is this a kind of choke and maybe it's not working and causing fuel starvation on a cold morning?
I'll worry about it not starting again when i come home on sunday

the air flow meter and fuel pump control need a good voltage to work, so unlike non fuel injected vans they wont catch when the battery is not fully charged

yep i'd read that which is why knowing the battery isn't the best i'd put it on charge....but if that is the case how did it fire eventually when the battery was nearly flat from trying to start? i'd have thought if it was going to start it would have at the begining as the battery was stronger then? it's always struggled in the cold but fine in summer.

  4. From what I understand the 5th injector only works when you are trying to start like a choke so that would not help and a weak battery in this weather will get killed off pretty quickly I have a battery that was on mine that you can have if it is of any good ? :)

probably got a build up of fuel in the cylinder and compressed it enough for a bang, or maybe one lucky spark made it through, get int he back pull of the air filter and hold open the air flow meter flap and give it a turn over( two people needed) i bet it starts, i remember properly now, the slow turning engine doesnt generate enough air flow though the airflow meter to move the flap and tell the engine it needs fuel.

  7. Started mine the other day, after being sat for a while. Had to crank it for about 20 seconds before it fired, my thoughts were fuel draining out as well. FI also.

ahh david that makes more sense, i think i'll have to get a new battery - to be fair it must be the battery as it starts great in the warm, wonder what the biggest battery i can fit is? want one off a diesel i reckon.

it will be ok now it's started today - i have a plan for later in the month to prove it's battery, i'll put my charger onto "start" and then try it with that connected - it's a big battery charger which you can start a landrover diesel off with a flat battery so if it winds over really fast and starts easier i'll know the battery isn't up to the job, i don't think the battery is u/s as it was new in nov 2010 i have the reciept from when it was fitted in america - i'm just guessing it didn't get cold enough to need a big battery so that's why it has a little one on.

I killed an aug 2010 battery with a loose alternator wire and 2 weeks of sitting nearly flat after the trip where the wire fell off.

AA man told me battery was well down.

Leisure battery also too flat to jump start from.

It was "only" £80 for the Halfords special offer HCB065 which is asize bigger than the battery that went before.

Major broke down yet again on the way to work, starter just clicked :(

Found it was a badly corroded wire from the starter to a relay box that caused these few issues. Replaced the wire n vroom, jobs a good one

yep i think bolly knows she's due a rest in a nice big warehouse again - rest of november to go then she can sit inside and be pampered in the dry, think i'll clean and check my wires to starter and earths this winter as well! - the list of "to do's" is already growing!

Ive got a huge tlc list too, brakes, dampers, balljoints, steering arms etc etc!!

  16. a new battery sounds a good idea, check the earth lead give it a good cleaning. contact to body etc,
gsf had an offer on bateries.
i always think if the battery starts playing up get another one.
check your fan belt while your under the engine lid. :)

i did a new fanbelt a month ago it charges ok 'cos i have a voltmeter - although thinking out loud the lights on and wipers on really make the meter drop - so it'sdeffo pointing to a weak battery cheers all - just waiting for mrs roo to get in and changed and we're off!
    she finishes at 1.30....

    so probably half 3

  18. it'll drop a bit with lights and wipers, but should still be above 12v... weak alt if it's not!!

  19. I had a similar starting problem in April this year - after lots checking and cleaning of the cold chart valve (5th) injector and air flow meter etc it turned out to a faulty cylinder head temp sensor (screws into head by cyl 3) I got a spare from camberley auto factors....seems these fi engines need all sensors in tip top condition to be solid starters....just my ten penneth for you. Cheers Jason
