The trouble is they prefer fatties too , my missus is the opposite , I however....
Apparently mozzies are attracted to Co2 we breath out , the more weight you carry the more you huff and puff especially setting up a camp

Me and the missus got stung by a swarm of very angry wasps a few weeks back , she reacted badly but nothing unusual there , I’ve been stung before and never reacted like I did - my arm swelled up like a roadside badger :D
As for the couple that went up my shorts....

  4. This is actually my job, no really, I spend my days trying to find better ways to control mosquitoes.

If you don't want to get bitten, use a repellent that contains DEET, picaridin or IR3535, these are the only ones you can easily get that are really effective. Citronella candles, etc., smell nice, might have a very slight impact, but I wouldn't use them if there was malaria or Dengue around. The plug in devices and passive emanators that contain metafluthrin or transfluthrin work really well in confined spaces, and outside if you remain fairly close to them.

Today is World mosquito day, so as a bonus, I'll tell you that only female mosquitoes bite, if they can't get a meal of blood, they can't lay any eggs. They are attracted over longer distances by CO2, and volatile body odours, but over the short range it is temperature that primarily attracts them. So if you are with someone who is warmer than you, the chances are they'll get bitten. Little evidence that garlic, Marmite, and the like make much difference, but beer seems to. This is probably because the alcohol causes the body to send more blood to its edges, (hence going red in the face) which makes you warmer, and more likely to be the one bitten. They tend to go for your feet and ankles, as they are attracted to butyric acid, and similar compounds (smells of cheese). There are mosquitoes in the UK that could transmit malaria, there just isn't any malaria around anymore for them to transmit. I have a couple of labs here with about 10,000 mosquitoes in... any volunteers to help feed them?

  6. is it only the female mozzie that makes the whining noise too?

  7. No, both sexes do, but, they make a slightly different pitch of whining noise, which they use to locate each other. The males and females are attracted to each other's whining, but once they've found each other they change the pitch slightly so that they both produce the same pitch. Males don't really interact with people, and just hang around ponds waiting for the females to emerge, so you'll probably mostly hear females. Females can live for three or even four weeks (as adults) whereas the poor male is lucky to make it much past a week.

  15. Never mind yer mozzies, it's Blandford flies you need to watch out for.

Been bitten twice by them, tiny little things that live near rivers and ponds, low fliers that bite below the knee, the bites swell up far worse than mozzies.

I often think I’m being set upon when I’m in my Asda van, do we have midges and insects that like to live down by the peddles? I’m forever getting spiders on me head and dangling down in front of your eyes as you’re reversing up a narrow lane, the spiders come from all the bushes we have to brush past trying to get to some peeps front doors I’m guessing, and then they re locate around the headrest and seat belt and up the lining of the roof. I’m a removal man for spiders:)
Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,, makes me arachnoletting no less :)
