Motorway speed

  1. I appreciate that each bus has a different setup, and other contributing factors but I have heard that the optimum speed is 3500rpm. Well I don't have a taco so I haven't a clue what my RPM's are.

So what are you running and what speed do you usually drive at on the motorway?

    And why?

  2. My speedo says 80, my sat nav says low 70's.

Why? It sounds and feels right, doesn't sound like she's straining at all. If I'm in fuel eco mode I try and sir around 60-70 but normally end up getting faster until it "feels" right again...

  3. I tend to stick to 60mph. It means I'm not going absolutely flat out what the engine's safely able to do, but I do manage to get past the lorries most of the time due to the fact that a lot of them now are doing about 55.

100 to 110 degrees dipstick oil temperature - 60mph to 70mph on the satnav.
The M27 from Southampton to Portsmouth has several noticeable hills.

In France, Belgium and the Netherlands on their flat motorways it was 65 to 75mph at the same oil temperature.

But it is all a lot quieter at 60 mph if we are not in a hurry.

  5. About 60 - 65mph. That's when the engine feels less strained on my 1600. About 3500 - 3750 on the tach - higher than this sounds horrible.

  7. Lorry speed, its a free tow, and why struggle to get past them, they'll only catch you on the uphills, just tuck in, This is good for 2 reasons, a) you get a free tug, and b) it regulates your speed, otherwise your always trying to overtake one more car, at the cost of precious fuel. Just tuck in and relax man O0

  8. The reason I ask is I have a 2 litre with twin carbs but a noisy 1600 box. I can do 80 according to the clock but tend to sit around 65/70. I know I have an oil leak which leaves the underside of the engine and heat exchangers damp, many times I've pulled up and other dubbers say "oh, your running a bit hot mate".

55-65 is my limit on motorways depending on lorries, if i canstick behind one i do that if it's clear i creep up to 65.

  10. 60-65 with my 1600 powered bay

  11. In my 2.0l FI, I cruised at 65 up to camperjam and the bus always seemed to want to go a bit faster but I reined it in.

On the way home in the middle of the night I cruised at 70 and she just felt happier, smoother and more responsive.

  12. A slow 55-60

Tagging on to a lorry also gives them a tiny boost too - by filling the low pressure that is generated behind the vehicle.

  20. Another one for tucking in behind a lorry.

    I can't believe folk do 70mph,
Have you tried stopping a bay in a hurry from anything like that speed?
