Motorway slip roads and middle lanes .

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Poptop2, Aug 24, 2011.

  1. any one over 35 or so may remember the little road safety cartoons and films. little reminder about how to use a roundabout, how to ride a bike safely, joining the motorway etc etc.
these were on inbetween programmes and at ad breaks
most people just forget the basics on how to drive courteously and these little reminders were great
i hate people that go right at roundabouts without signalling and then get arsey if someone pulls out on them!
slip roads, speed up to match the speed of traffic, then sort yourself out once you are on

This was brought on by a incident last night , i was coming up to a junction on the M6 and i pulled out to let a car on , meanwhile i had caught up to the back end of a slower moving lorry , this car driver decides to undertake me and nip between us -- there was'nt enough room , so he is now boxed in and has to drop back and allow me past . suddenly he's giving me the finger blasting on his horn and getting very irate .

Anyhow i ignore him and carry on overtaking the slower lorry , but the car driver is'nt happy so he goes around me in the outside lane cuts in front of me and slams on is brakes , christ how i missed him i will never know , but not happy with that he does it again and again , until i drop back into the inside lane and behind the slow lorry .he zooms off , i telephone police with his number and guess what -- they could'nt be bothered to get him as it would be my word against his .

This car driver had kids in the back !.
    i would'nt like to think of the outcome -- 32 tonnes travelling at 56 mph - he obviously had'nt , scary !.

  4. There are some real idiots out there.

  6. I drive a 1971 MGB as my daily driver, its not slow, I might have had it up to 100mph on the odd occasion (although Id never admit it)

Some drivers on the road see old vehicles and just have to get in front of them!

what really annoys me is when driving along with a few cars gap between me and the car in front, absoulutly nothing behind for at least a mile, and doing 65 - 70 in the inside lane, why do people have to cut me up to get in front of me to take the exit slip road I am paralle with??? why not pull in behind??

I get it whilst entering the M way too, going the same speed as some one on the motor way who doesnt give way or speed up, so I speed up to get in front and they speed up  , I slow down, they slow down

I dont get wound up about these things any more, I used to be fuming about bad drivers or being cut up all day. Now if it happens I let them give me the finger (even though Im doing nothing wrong) and they get wound up, I just smile and wave and forget about it in 5mins and carry on with my day.

I try to be courteous to other drivers but the lack of manners of some drivers!! a little nod or thank you wave when you give way to some one costs nothing.

I really feel for you Malc, having to drive for a living, you must have seen the worst of UK drivers in your time :(

Before i became a lorry driver i ws the same , i did a job where i had to get up and down the country to site meetings , high presssure , boss on my back , critical tolerances , etc , i was always trying to make up time and drove accordingly -- how i am still here i will never know -- 20 + years in the slow lane kinda does the trick ;)

  11. As an ex sales rep (must have done a million miles), an ex biker, a sometime driver of my daughter's 7.5 tonne horse box, and now a westy driver I have seen it from all perspectives. The bike taught me how to do it best, especially when it's busy. Clock the traffic as soon as you start down the slip and enter the busy stream with indicators bazing at the same speed as everyone else, then floor it if you want to go faster. Not getting in anyone's way and thanking any trucker who gives you a few yards and watch 'em smile back.
My pet hates are people who don't know how to use roundabouts (including signalling) and people who think that those little painted mini roundabouts have opposite rules to normal ones.

  13. The worst drivers in my opinion are, (in no particular order); women with attitude, old sales reps, old men and a couple of young guys in a fast-ish car.

Although if you ever get a female sales rep, head for the hills. The number of times I've seen them doing their makeup or brushing their hair etc at 85mpg inside the outside lane still refusing to move over.

Oh, I've even seen one lady with an actual china mug of tea and slice of toast in one hand driving along and brushing her hair with the other!

  15. I had my multi million pound idea whilst sat behind one lorry overtaking another on a dual carriageway for five minutes...... KERS!!

Like the systems on the F1 cars. They get an extra 80HP shot for a number of seconds a lap. If lorrys were fitted with this system they could hit the overtake button to make passing quicker. It would have to be regulated of course so that they didn't just gaffa the swith on but maybe some sort of overtake button might be worth investigating. Obviously I know they are speed restricted by law but you know, it's nice to dream!

I also want to own the company that fits 'all' the lorrys in the world with this system. Then I can buy loads more campers! ;D

But the merging on to the M way is the thing that annoys me most about driving, followed incredibly closely by traffic jams!!

i often think this would cure the bunching myself - good idea dude .

My idea that gets me really thinking is a couple of heat guided vapourising guns just below my headlights - thwak bad driver is history - now thats summary justice at the max ;)

  17. I like the system in France where you cant change lanes to the inside lane until past the on ramp. Makes sense.

  18. Thats because the French are much more courteous and are much better drivers in general. I like the French i go there often on my bike and theyre such polite drivers. Nice country too.

    I exclude Paris.

  19. Things like this make me understand why more Americans are fitting cameras in their vehicles.
This video shows my biggest fear while riding, also the woman was like "I didn't see you"

Biker rear ended lands on his feet
