more alternator troubles!!!

  1. Looks like the orientation of the alternator is slightly wrong to me  The lug that it hitting shouldn't be down like that, either that or the body of the alt isn't quite right!!

As for the earth lug, it was originally for generators where you needed to have a good earth between the genny and the regulator unit (even though both were technically earthed through the chassis!!)

  2. I think thats the only way it is likely to go ......otherwise the teminals will be underneath

and the back plate mounting wont allow it to rotate slightly.......only by a 1/4 of a turn .....which will throw out the position of the 'opening' between inner and outer backing plate pieces

this pic might be a little clearer

  3. No that looks fine!!

I guess it's your shiny alt that is at fault ;)

  4. I've had another look at the fan shaft heres a pic of the hub I fitted from the dynamo

looking at it just now, it looks like it should go down another 1mm or so....but I seem to remember it not wanting to even using the nut to push it down further

and this is the amount of shimms and spacers I had on it to try and get clearance from the back plate .....which might not have helped any wobble

and with the fan on, you can see the thread doesnt even go flush with the end of the nut which is a bit worrying

so I have a new hub on order, one of these

so hopefully as the flange is not at one end of the hub, it should reduce the amount of spacers/shims, and with the new fan hopefully sitting square on the hub, it will, with any luck mean the fan will sit further down the shaft so the nut will go on further.......hopefully!!!

if any one has had any similar problems, or can see what I'm doing wrong please let me know lol!!!

  5. I bet you've got the wrong nut on that... I've seen nuts that have a section machined into them with a ring, and I'm guessing the ring will fit down into the gap on the end of the boss... but I have never seen a boss that tall before!!

I'll have to have a look, but I'm sure I have a 36mm "ring" nut that would work on that

  6. like this in fact

  7. yep, the old nut I've go looks like that - with the recessed ring .......just the fan is not far enough down the shaft :(

  8. tis very odd dude

  9. I think it's the sheer thickness of blingy chrome that's stopping it sitting right ;)...

  10. lol .....that will probably peel off on a few weeks of use

  11. ok, so I've fitted a new hub and a new fan.......and the fan was still 'wobbly' o_O .....so I borrowed a back plate off some one else....refitted it .....and its still wobbly and catching on the back plate

it is as if the fan is at an angle, so it only catches on part of the revolution

I thought perhapse the shaft of the brand new alternater was bent....I couldnt see any wobble from the shaft by eye though

.....I could hear (and feel) a slight ticking noise in one place when rotating the fan.....so I think I might have found the problem

I decided to take off the end cover (fan end) of the alternator

I noticed there seemed a fair put of slop or play in the bearing (couldnt feel any grinding with it off the alternator) with the end plate/bearing housing still on the shaft, I found I could wobble it a bit too much for my liking

.....so I think the problem is the bearing in the fan end.....either that of the bearing housing is machined slightly off centre. Either one could transfer that small movement in the shaft to a big wobble at the outer edge of the fan

    ....cheap expensive chinese crap
