middle sill

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by chris_g, May 20, 2012.

  1. Back again, does anyone know if the bottom of the middle sill connects to the inner and outer sill at the bottom mine appears to be a bit rusty and short. Ive had a look at the three resto threads ive been following but cant find a picture that shows this.

  2. does this help...? ;)

  3. yep. There should be 3 layers of metal, inner, middle and outer or rear arch, and they should all be joined together. I usually put holes in the inner and outer sills because they're thinner gauge steel and then plug weld them to the middle sill. If yours is too short it's because it's rotted away or a previous restorer has just cut it away rather than repair it.

  4. Thanks for the photos and reply, i,ve been using both your resto threads and Zeds to help me along.
I brought my bus and it looked mint, what i cant believe is that someone has replaced the outer sills and welded them to some tin and then used self tappers and filler to connect it to the rotten old sill by the floor..
I've already replaced the near side sill and out riggers, welded up the chassis where they join but the top hat beam at the front was shot so have just cut half the floor out to get better access, happy days.

  6. Last year when i got the bus I new nothing, now i'm fast becoming an expert. But why do so much work on the outside including as respray and leave so much undone underneath it just doesn't make sense. At least I now know its been done properly.
Thanks again for all the help.

It's more down to earning a living, which you don't do if you do it properly.
