I made my blu tack sausage. It's sticky, it's not encouragingly strong under tension.

I'll look for solder, I might be able to get the camera in as well though my video doesn't seem to play on here...

...though it's moot now anyway, I may not bother at all!

Back to reinstalling to stock silencer...

Just as well its a type 4 with a flat spark plug hole or you would probably crunch the camera with the steeper spark plug angle on a type 1.

    This is a fascinating story.

Again though if it were a Type 1 you could fairly easily measure the stroke with a depth gauge..

You could! You win some you loose some. If I had indoor space in walking distance it would have been out and in pieces weeks ago. I really should look into that harder.

The 71mm cranks are the same forging as the 66mm but with offset and reduced diameter big end journals. It results in less overlap between mains and big ends so the 71mm crank is weaker and more prone to flex – and the bigger the stroke the weaker the crank.:(

  5. Quite frightening how little clearance there is  No wonder they go bang if you drop a valve.

They just nip out of the way in time don't they? I think they open about 9mm and stay within the combustion chamber... when all is well.

  7. Just in the nick of time! Scary to think they're doing that hundreds of times a minute...

  9. Fascinating story, so what's the conclusion @zedders ?

For now rain literally stops play. Maybe I'll try and squash something to get a rough idea of the deck but unless some day I take a head off I'll never know quite what I have. I could have done it when I re-torqued the heads a while ago but I didn't want to risk disturbing the barrel/case seal getting a head right off at the time.

So...I have the fartyness and popping that started when I changed exhaust but could be a coincidence. When there's a break in the weather I'll start swapping the old exhaust back on. If that cures it I'll be a very happy bunny and start a conversation with the new exhaust supplier.

If not I'm back to wondering if I've cracked a head. It's a palaver getting a head off in the bus. Both off I may have to get it stripped naked and do in the cargo area, it's too much to do under the bus. The whole thing may be too much for a car park job TBH.

  11. Would a compression test show a cracked head?

  12. Would marina owner let you hire a 10ft container for a garage?..

You'd think so, but it doesn't. I have stupid high compression, though that could be the gauge because they used to measure up at 165-168. Now I'm getting 175-185. Can't think how to test the gauge.

No, everyone would want one. There is a Renault Traffic that passes between people and is used as a shed, I missed it by a whisker last time it was for sale. That could be a way forward, buy a van, rebuild the engine in the back then sell it on after. I don't need much space.

After procrastinating for most of the morning, exhaust is 95% swapped. I was getting too wet and abandoned with a few tinware screws and the back of the foam seal to go.

    It's stopped raining now.
I'm thinking it's still going to fart and pop so I'm in no hurry really. It'll certainly rattle - I dropped an m8 nut inside and no chance getting it out again.

    Time for lunch. :food:

Does it help to know that mine pops on the overrun too – always has done. :) In town I change up and use the brakes, out of town I just let it pop and bang. Two different engines, two different exhausts, common cam and carbs.

Mine has never popped and was very quiet before. My wasser crank 2l c35 type-1 with VS exhaust and J-tubes didn't pop once and didn't sound like a big exhaust leak...and it's getting no better however many times I refit and fart around with the heat exchangers and VS exhaust.

I'm embarrassed to either accelerate or decelerate, it's not right.

If you keep on about it, I may have to try to stop mine doing it. :)
