Manky gusset!

If it makes you feel better, I looked at mine when I got the van, and thought it was a right bodge job...

 

Here's mine. It looked so crap, I naturally assumed Devon had fitted it.

 

I’ve got different ones on each side, one is originally from mines and the other from a scabby old 72 that I broke (Madonna) (my donor) as mine was originally a panel van my gussets as well as being manky were also different.

October 1973.. the guy doing the welding has improved..

 

I expect Quality Inspector to do his job.

 

he did and it was good enough to pass quality control

 

To be fair to VW, the welding done at the Karmann factory was even worse... you should see some of the welds on the body strengthener they put in Beetles..

 

Well tbh that looks pretty neat for a 70s vw..shame I cant find pics I took whan I ripped all headliner out of my 78 bus..as its a sunroof late very late model its got all that sunroof tray welded on the inside of the roof panel..some welds (they used mig welders) are horrible and lots of welding wire sticking out and painted in factory primer..they really did not care at the factory and honestly Ive seen lots of buses done up on this forum done even to much better standards then factory..

Czesc, yeah it's easier to take pride in something that you own, than when you are paid 10zl an hour on a production line working for a car maker

 

still made 10 times better than any other vehicle of that era

 

Agreed..well maybe apart from the merc of that era though..but yeah for a ‚cheap’afordable volks car they were made of good quality
