Malpassi Regulator Orientation

  1. Fret not. It’s all coming back to me… I did take the top off and turned the bottom bit through 180* to match the old Filter King. Forgot to mention that ;)

Ah, now that makes sense. Anyway I’m quite happy with it. Fuel pressure gauge coming mid week, so I’ll go for Way Out Westy recommendation of 2.1 to 2.5 psi with Weber 34 icts

Start on the low side and turn it up if needs be.

  8. I think “remember” is probably the case.

  9. Following this thread I was thinking a Malpassi would be a good future addition...until I discovered that my Kadron carbs operate best at 1.5-2psi. That’s quite low compared to most, I gather, and quite a bit lower than my electric fuel pump puts out (2.5-4psi).

It seems I’m better off getting one now, whilst I sort out the engine bay, prior to having the rebuild installed so I can be up & running from the off.

I’m settled on the alloy Filter King (my fuel pump has a filter but lord knows how old it is and not all fuel pumps come with one...and the ones that do are sometimes rubbish - this Malpassi seems a safe bet good bit of kit covering all bases for the future).

The 85mm version means I can easily install a gauge without any faffing around. Yep, it’s chunky!! So my main question is:

Are my carb filters, at 15cm diameter, massive compared to most? The outside edge is about 2cm in from the edge of the tinware below.

I ask because looking at as many photos as possible, these filters seem to fit rather comfortably by a Type 1. With my engine out i’m relying on measurements & plum-bobs to guesstimate using a comparable sized object (this coffee mug is 15% bigger).

The only place it can go is closer to the firewall than the bulgy bit on the spare wheel (white stripe just visible above).

That puts the apex of the Filter King behind the apex of carb’s filter, with enough room for routing the fuel hoses.

As you can see, from roughly gauging, it’s gona be tight for a Filter King but doable...it really does look like my carb filters have been dining out, American style, on Burger King!

  10. Mine is quite close to the dellortos, but if you mount it a bit lower you will be fine. Can get you photos tomorrow if needed.

If you get the non filter version it will be even smaller. Filter by gearbox should stop any crud from your tank. So the filter on the filter king probably isn't needed.

    I didn't know they did a petrol king version until I saw @snotty s

  12. Cool. Let’s see your Dells next to the King.

Yes, the Petrol King is only 65x65mm I think, then add the hose connectors. That would fit in any orientation. As Zedders said, I just fancied having a no fuss option with the gauge addition on the Filter King.

    This setup:

The alternative, but i’d want to leave the gauge adaptor in place (not the gauge), which some say is fine but others say not too.

I’m probably just being a pansy at the thought of taking a fuel hose off to put the adaptor in place if I needed to check the pressure. Really I should be getting used to the idea that fiddling with fuel hoses is something I have to become comfortable with.

  14. @Milo-steel thanks for that. Slightly different engine bay to mine, but it looks like your 85mm Filter King is about the same size as your Carb filters - which is almost half the size of mine.

@snotty Cheers dude. I’ve looked at your photos (Space Spider and previously with the filter). Also looks like you could get an arm between it and the Carb filter. Reckon mine are just massive.

I’m in my usual state of decision making paralysis.

Only downside of the Petrol King is that the fuel hose has to have enough slack in it to put the gauge adaptor in place (if it really shouldn’t be left in situ)...which probably isn’t an issue really.

  15. The filter king is mounted forward of the filter on the base of the spare wheel making it look a similar size, they are standard Dell 36 filters

    Oval dimensions: 178 x 118mm, 83mm Tall.

  16. @PanZer

This is where mine was, which easily clears the twin carbs/filters.

Now it is mounted slightly higher up and is has less clearance between it and the carb filter.

  17. Cheers guys. I see now that the Dells are similar volume to mine, but an oval shape, so that’s why you’ve got more clearance to the side than i’m anticipating I would.

Your filters must be quite close to the firewall at the back right? I’ve got quite a cavity there that the Filter King could slot in to then.

Thanks Paul. I’ve actually read every thread and other forums about the Malpassi. I’m also considering the routing of the fuel lines. It’s complicated further by realising that on a Filter King I don’t think you could thread in angled connectors. So you’re stuck with a down and a forward facing one.

I’m possibly just drawn to them because they look like marching robots.

  18. Just buy a Petrol King and slap it in wherever it fits ;)

  19. Will fit inside the carb filter!

Think a decision is made though, and yes, Petrol King wins. It will definitely fit and I just realised the front facing barb off the Filter King would hit the carb filter. That would’ve been an expensive mistake.
