Life-changing amount of money - how much?

  1. Here's an honest question for you TLB-ers, who seem a pretty varied bunch.

Lot of talk about selling their Olympic torches for large sums (if they can get it, that is...), together with other folk being short of a few bob.

What would you consider a life-changing amount of money, if it fell into your lap? I don't mean a few thou that'll last you a while - I mean an amount that would have a serious effect on your life going forwards.

    50k? 100k? Half a million?

Obviously, if you won 20 meg on the lottery, you'd be sorted, but that's a bit excessive (and unlikely).

What would you consider that number to be...and what would you use it for? How would you change your life as it is at present if you had the funds available?

    Just interested in your views...:)

  2. Im not going to be gready 30k would be fine.
Paying the bills without thinking about the money would be nice.

50k I reckon me and her indoors could get away with working only 3 days a week and spend quality time together.

  3. It would need to be enough to retire now - which given my advancing years would be about £300k. Just enough to pay off all debts and give me enough to live on until the pension kicks in.

£1080000 would be quite handy at the moment, my wife has decided to retire (she calls it being an artist), this would clear up our mortgage and finance our next project without any need for banks or outside help. It would also mean that we need not make a profit, therefore removing 100% of the stress. Sorted.

When can I have my money please? ;)

    I'd like around £180k.

Pay off the mortgage and have a bit to do something amazng with.

    I'd happily accept anything though.

  6. Yea but I have a simple life, that why drive a split screen.

  7. i would like enough to pay the mortgage let my wife stop working her job is very stressfull i wouldn't want to stop working i would die from inactivity if i didn't work

    300 k would be good

  8. Wow you lot are cheap. 'they' reckon to retire at 60 and to live till 80 you need £500,000 to cover everything. That is based on a £25k pa income. So with that in mind to retire now I'd need £1.5 million. For a life changer it would be to buy a house outright, a new car and a little spending money so you'd be looking at half a mill straight away.

  9. I'd say about 10 mil, but only because once the mortgage is paid off, and I have enough not to have to work again, I'm going to have to do something with my life, so I would need money to do that. There would be some travelling, but there would also probably be some kind of animal sanctuary in there somewhere too.

  10. I reckon just 1 million would do it for me. Anything less and I'd be really disappointed ;)

  11. For me it would depend upon what rate of interest I could get. The interest would need to be enough to live comfortably without ever touching the lump sum and top up the lump at the rate of inflation. Never touch the lump sum! That is the mistake many of these lottery winners make. They buy everyone a house and a car, have a slap up holiday and they are already eating away at the lump sum. Leave it for a while and spend the interest.

  13. I'd keep my job but maybe go part time, With that in mind if you could make the cheque out for £480k that would be great thanks.
That would buy me a house, pay off the mortgage on the flat so it could be rented, and pay for another bay.

I'll keep an eye out in the post for the cheque :D

  14. Enough to buy a house so the rent didnt take most of our income each month would be life changing for us

  16. I kmnow the royal mail can be a bit dodgy, maybe you should do a bank transfer i'll send you my bank details.....

Hang on a minute this is all going very Frank Sebti!!!

    :D

  17. I find money to make things life changing bit difficult, because it depends on what your like your circumstances and if youd spend it on you or others. Depends on what sort of life you live now too, like you said snotty youve got millions ;) money cant buy health and cant buy happiness so just give me those things i dont want the money it causes problems and greed ;D.But as your offering snotty 100k just to top the account up a do lol

  18. enough to pay more mortgage off would be a start enough to not have to work the rest of my life even better

  19.
  20. ^ Yep, enough to clear the mortgage would let me jack in work and just do the odd shift if I'm short of cash.

I'd let the missus build me up a nice pension from her salary >:D
