Had an oil leak when under pressure, 1600 TP it was showing itself by leaking from the base of no 3 when hot then being blown everywhere, I pulled the engine today and replaced the oil cooler seals, put it back together and..... no change, now Iv'e ether hashed fitting them or its something worse. now would I be right in thinking if the case were cracked it would it drip all the time. Do they ever leak from the base of the cylinders

They can crack around the oil cooler stand mounting so it blows out across the top of the case and you hope it's the seals. Not heard of cracking around the cylinders before but this oil is obviously also blown down between the cylinders as well... Hope that's not it. :(

all this area is under pressure as the first place the oil goes from the pump is to the cooler...

  3. They can and do leak from the base of the cylinders!!

A cracked case, generally will only leak when it is hot!!

  5. only if they're loose

What I would advise you to do is pull off the tinware and run it for 5 minutes with the tins off... this should show you where the oil is coming from!!

Engine will be fine with no cooling for short periods

I had an engine in and out about 5 or six times trying to find it was anything other than cracked block. Leave everything off as Paul advises and you'll save yourself a lot of the old in/out in/out (ooer missus). ..

Yes, looked like oil cooler seals with the fan housing on.
I rebuilt the top end after major over-heating, then the owner said "while it's there can you check out the oil leak". I didn't know it leaked - it was knackered top-end and got rebuilt before running it. All good in the end with a "rods-out" bottom end from Laurie Pettitt saving the day.

I might just have a rods-out, end float in spec, bottom end if if goes pear shaped. ;)

In the immortal words of Tina Turner I went in the barn with the leak "Two go in, one comes out"

After the leak down test using my finger and tongue it turned out that my existing oil cooler was not holding pressure, after about a minute me tongue just come away, so `I replaced me old cooler with another old cooler that passed the tongue test put new seals on it and bingo no leaky bum bum down!!!
